View Full Version : yeah :) moved from Truespace to 3ds max
Clawhammer 08-09-2003, 03:28 PM Hi all,
Just wanted to get this of my chest, I'm new here and this is why: :) >>
After 6 years of Truespace, I just got more and more irritated by the fact that Truespace crashes a lot while working with NURBS, or because booleans dont work, and I got tired of faking the global illumination. I dont want to wait 80 hours...... for a GI render is complete. (to go short: irritation.) So I decided to move to 3DS.
It has been 2 weeks ago that I started with 3DS......I am totally addicted to it ! its terrible ! its beyond my wildest thoughts :P This week I did 3ds max 16 hours a day. (my wrist hurts, and I had to put a soft pillow underneath my elbow...its totally red....)
My first object: a shock absorber
My second object: a truck wheel
(the frustrating part, things I could do in Truespace in the blink of an eye, I had to search in 3ds, so one little truck wheel took about one day.....)
Ive worked my way trought lots of tutorials, reading them and testing some important parts of them.
Ive started with my first project last sunday :) it does not have a name yet, but its going to be a war catamaran for swamp and river use.... (right.......fictional ofcourse)
Well thanks for reading the post of a total Dutch newbie :D I will be posting a lot more the next months, mainly questions, though i like to learn a lot myself before asking....
Greetz Mark,
now Ive got some doubts about posting a pic of the model, there is lots of detail to add, and to change ofcourse :D, but im going to attach one anyway !

Got to love email notification,
Thx alot, I'm feeling more confident now.
Well Ive chosen 3ds MAX because most job applications in this sector have it in their job description, Also I think 3ds max is still the most supported package, wich might come in handy (aftermarket hop ups, oh they are called plug-ins...lol)
Ive got my first "plug-in" (not really) today, Symbiont, wich I already knew from Truespace, its good to have a usefull set of procedural shaders back, makes me feel more at home. :D

I did not know there is a limit on the smilies, a good thing because I use hundreds of them every post....

hmmmm why are people unhappy about it ? :) I'am probably still blinded by all the new shiny buttons :)
For me its has been a big improvement so far, from Truespace to 3ds. :)

Well im in a similar boat. I just moved over from Lightwave (Company wanted Max or Maya users), so I decided to give max a shot. Im not TOO thrilled over the deal, i'd still like my speedy lightwave package but, I guess over all max is more suiting for game design which is what we are doing. One thing that has upset me most with max is the ****in bugs though.
Maybe i'll be more happy when I get all the work arounds sorted but, I wont pretend to be a happy camper just yet.

Hmmm :) MAX is very errorless compared with TS, lol :) Dont have much experience with Lightwave, have seen it a couple of times, looks a bit like a combo between the above 2.
Greetz Mark
Oh a company ! One of those things I'm also looking for, guess ive got to build up a portfolio for that first :)

The most unstable program I ever used for 3d was Animation Master. It was ridiculous. It would crash in XP when I clicked the "save" button.

drunkirishmic: well I started with in it in 96, best job I did so far in it was this one: (version 6,5)Truck (http://www.powergraphics.nl/truck2048.jpg)
I like Truespace, but the switch to 3ds was the best thing i did in these 7 years.
rattlesnake:
thx :) I'm very addicted to it.
Also thx for the link to a material tutorial. :D

To be honest, I think TrueSpace is the best way to start in 3D art.
When starting out, it should be simple. 3DSMax, Lightwave, Maya etc are far too intimidating. TrueSpace gives beginners an ideal workspace that doesn't give them nightmares...
However, there comes a time when TrueSpace just isn't up to the job. I.E - Working on "Pirates of the Carribian" or "Lord Of the Rings".
Saying that though...it was good enough for "The Matrix":p

Well agree on that :)
but did they used it in "the Matrix" ? I would like to know more about it ! :)

Re: Clawhammer.
Sure they did! Maya, Lightwave, XSI etc just weren't upto the job...the Neo verses Smiths fight for example!:p

I found this thread to be quite amusing. Reason? All the comments on how "buggy" max is and how "well supported" max is because of all the "plug-ins" one can get.
Don't get me wrong, I like max. Max was the first CG app I used waaay back on version 1 so I do have a soft spot for it.
However, new max users should understand why max is so buggy. It's because max is made virtually entirely of plug-ins. A huge amount of room for error and glitches, imo. Discreet really need to re-evaluate the max (lacking) architecture and rebuild the program from the ground up. It's not going to happen in ver. 6. 7? 8? It's anyone's guess and has been discussed in great detail here on CGT in the past.
Me? I still use max and a little Softimage at work but not as much as in the 'glory days' of design visualization. I've just decided to get off the max boat and ordered up LightWave. For the price/features/performance ratio LW can't be beat, imho.
Nice modeling though! Have fun with max, and more importantly, with CG in general!
All you have to do is look in the "hiring" section to see how supported 3ds Max is.
For all the whining about bugs, crashes, frame support it still goes on and get's the job done.
3ds Max is a very good program. There is no way to get around it does have bugs. It does crash from time to time. Yes, it is one big plug in. It could for sure use a re-write. Discreet could have done a better job. All this is true. However, plenty of SOLID beautiful work is done every single day with this software. People have been saying 3ds Max will die since V. 2! and it is still around and still dominating the game market. It still get's picked up in movie work.
I am personally learning in Maya. However, I also started with Max. Max takes a lot of abuse from people who never paid a dime for it. It is still (I think) the most widely warez 3d app there is. Go look around and you will see crying about every 3d application. Lightwave IMO blows at character animation but some people create amazing animation with it. Maya by some is said to have horrible poly modelling but Stahlberg don't seem to care. Max is supposed to be buggy and bloated but Blur studios are making a nice living off it.
No app is perfect and no matter what you pick, I will bet you one thing. You will have to at some point work around the issues that come up. Trading apps is trading problems. Pick the poison and make that app work for you.
Just my take

Happy max user here. And making a good salary with it. Several of us are where I work. Just looking forward to 6 and eventually, the rewrite. Good luck Clawhammer.
