View Full Version : What CG magazines do you read?

I've been browsing the magazine rack at my local bookstores and I've found surprisingly little in the way of CG mags. There's Digit and, uh, CGWorld, I think, both from the UK, and both costing $15... (Did I mention I'm in the US?) I hardly drop that much for books! I did order the new Digit (#64) to get the copy of ParticleIllusion2 that's in there... Are there any US magazines worth looking at? Do you guys get all your info off of the web? I prefer having magazines that I can tote around with me with glossy ads and all that claptrap... Something that can keep me close to the action, when I've forced myself to go eat lunch.

Uh, anyway, just curious if I'm missing something good. Anyone?

Sadly, I don't think that there are any decent CG magazines in the US. That's why I tend to stick to 3D World. It costs me $13.99 a month, but it's definitely worth it.

I buy Computer Arts and 3D World almost every month; both are awesome magazines

I looked at a copy of 3D World tonight and the tutorials looked pretty sweet. But the price... Am I right that even the tuts for the other progs can generally be adapted to C4D? Guess I may have to bite that bullet myself...

Lately, they've been devoting much more time to C4D. I'd wager that it's covered about the same as Maya, 3dsmax, & Lightwave. Plus, many of the non-C4D tutorials can be adapted with varying degrees of ease.

I just subscribed to Computer Arts. I particularly like that magazine because it has a broad scope on, well, computer arts. I use alot of other software such as flash, photoshop, illustrator, etc. I also skim the 3d World mag when i usually go to buy the computer arts magazines when i use to buy them one at a time.

I read a few articles here and there at chapters from 3D world and computer arts, used to get computer arts every month before it split into the two mags, only one I make sure to buy all the time is cinefex.

3D world and digit, altought I hardly read digit anymore, I found I was having to skip through pages and pages of software reviews which can get pretty tedious, 3d world is cool though :D been in it once, lol :p

3D World monthly, Renderosity quarterly, and on occasions, Digit. The former is about the best though and covers a wide spectrum of styles and subjects. And yes, like Squid, I have been in it a couple of times, including front cover, so I am biased! :buttrock:

I am a 3Dworld subscriber ofcourse. I used to read Computer Arts and Digit a lot but found myself skipping through most of the pages so I only occasionaly buy Computer Arts nowadays.

I'll be in a Taiwanese 3d magazine (http://www.3duser.com.tw) so I'll try to read that too once I get it :scream: , once I get a good portfolio I'll hope to be in 3d world before the end of the year.

Oh, I might add that the online version of Millimeter - http://www.millimeter.com - is pretty interesting reading most of the time too.

Way to go Daan!:applause: - I had a couple of foreign ones - CGWorld in Japan, and NewCG in China actually interview me, which is kind of bizarre to look at, but all good publicity!

WHY? marketing exercise? heh heh

3d World always.

digit and computer arts depending on what content/reviews/freebies they have month to month. they are both good mags...but my interest recently has been more 3d focused and 3d world has filled the gap where the others stop.
then again i'm based in the UK...then again they don't seem cheap here either so i guess its all relative really.
happy reading.

3D World and Computer Arts. I dont buy every issue of each, but I take a special trip to Barnes and Noble each month to sit down with a latte and look them over at least.

Anyone remember 3d Design? It was the primary 3d mag in the USA but they stopped publishing that one about 5 years ago. I was bummed whn it went out of business.

Computer Arts, 3D World, sometimes Digit, Computer Graphics World (occasionally...gets very technical for my brain!). There's another one I think of it's name from Sweden, I think. They ALWAYS have a pretty girl on the cover, which was probably why I picked it up originally. Kind of an odd magazine. They seem to talk about software that I thought was extinct, but I guess is still used over there.

As someone else stated, no US 3D mags as far as I know. There used to be 3D Design mag, but they went under and finished my subscription with Game Developer, which was interesting, but I'm not a game developer!

Like most, I subscribe to 3D World, which is the closest match to my interests. I also buy Computer Arts, but that's quite rare since most of the time a fair proportion of the content isn't directly of interest (I don't own Photoshop ...). I also used to subscribe to Game Developer, which had some very interesting articles in it. Finally, I once bought an excellent magazine when I was in Australia which had a couple of great articles in it. However, I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. Oh well ...

Yah, £78.99 (or GBP) is US $127! Quite a lot for 13 magazines, but about 2/3 the price you would pay buying it each month at the bookstore. You can pay with an American credit card though. And the cards usually get a good exchange rate.

I just bought the latest 3D World, #38, and it has a lot of C4D in it, including tutorials on modeling a head and HDRI. Other articles are good too, and generally informative about the industry and tools. Some good stuff on the CD as well... I can't afford to subscribe, but as someone else said, I'll definitely stop into Borders and peruse it.

Oh yeah, congrats Squid! It was cool to see you in 3D World too. Though I have to say I was a little surprised to see that fairly simple robot, when you have so many beautifully detailed pieces in your gallery.
