View Full Version : Cintiq giving wobbly lines
primativ 09-15-2009, 06:26 PM I am using a 12 inch cintiq with photoshop cs3. Its a great tool for painting but I am having trouble getting good lineart with it.
When I use it, no matter how careful I am, my lines come out slightly wobbly. This happens anywhere on the tablet I draw.
The only remedy I have found so far is to draw at 200% but this is too time consuming.
Any photoshop or wacom gurus got a solution?

Perhaps instead of zooming in, try zooming out, so you need a shorter stroke which might give you a steadier line as you will move your hand faster.
The other option is using a larger tablet...

That was what I meant, if I am working at 25% the lines are very jaggy looking.

Are you painting with a high enough canvas resolution?
If you're using photoshop, what are your brush settings?

this might not be the case but:
do u have any device near the tablet that could emit frequencies that could interfere?
cell phones, wireless phones, big CRT etc .
Another place to look at is the preferences either of PS or Wacom.
It might have been in AE vector paint fx though..
I recall there was an "enable high resolution coordinates" checkbox which used to cause trouble.
When unchecked all worked fine.

I am using an 3300 x 2400 canvas. I have smoothing turned on in my brushes. There is a wireless phone about a foot away from the wacom and another monitor about 3 inches away.
I have the same wobbly lines even when I use the wacom on my lap.
Thanks

A few of the people i know who own the 12" cintiq say it's got issues with tracking, particularly near the edges.

The tracking near the edges is pretty bad on the 12" cintiq, so I just draw in the middle of the pad. If you are getting wobbly lines in the middle, it might be time to contact tech support.

Try Systemax SAI, it doesn't wobble, it's an issue with Photoshop 4 to CS4.

DeltaMikeSierra- Yeah it seems these cintiqs all have issues around the edges, on the wacom forum they acknowledged the fact that the screen is bigger than the sensor.
MikeCollins- I can get good lines in the middle of the screen if I draw at 200% but this alters my drawing technique in a bad way.
workbench- I think another program with better smoothing may be the key to getting crisp line work. I am looking into flash right now with some success although it has many of its own limitations.

I think the problem might be that you are editing the image at a 25% zoom. It dosen't matter what resolution the tablet might be, the positioning of the brush will be limited to your moniter's resolution. So when you are drawing at 25% the brush is estemating (badly) where it should be every 4px. To see an exagratted effect of this, zoom way out to 5%, then with a small brush draw a circle that fits the canvas. Zoom to see what you've done and you'll see that the line is all jagged.
Granted, this is going by my experinces with my tablet (an intuios). So unless I have a fundemently flawed setup, the only solution that I can see is to get a 3300 x 2400 res moniter.
A less likley culprit might be that you have the brush tip shape spacing set too high. Lower it and the distance between the circles that make up the stroke of the brush will be lowered.
Is this any help?:)
First post, whoot!

I think I will have to rule out working at anything under 100% resolution when it comes to line work on the cintiq.
Thanks for the replies!
