Hello Everyone,

I've got a doubt about memory usage and rendering. The graphics card that I use is ATI Radeon HD 3450. RAM is 4 GB.

When I render a MAYA scene file setting the priority to 'High' in task manager, mayabatch.exe shows the CPU usage to the fullest. But when I check it using ATI memory viewer, it shows the following:

Under CPU tab:

Global Memory -->

Total Phys: 3.00 Gb
Available Phys: 1.64 Gb
Process Phys: 196.97 Mb
Total Page: 5.84 Gb
Available Page: 4.51 Gb
Process Page: 189 Mb

Process Memory -->

Total In Use: 329.44 Mb
Total Free: 1.68 Gb
Total Virtual: 2.00 Gb

Under GPU Tab:

HW -->

Total: 256 Mb
Used: 37 Mb
Free: 218 Mb

What should I do to make maximum usage of the memory while rendering in MAYA???

There are options for 3DS Max and Fusion. What about MAYA???

Thanks in Advance. :)

change your OS to 64x

Maya, especially mental ray, will not take advantage of your GPU for rendering. So, out of your 4GB system RAM, 256MB is allocated for your GPU's RAM as well. That leaves you with under 4GB for Windows to start with, which is plenty for everything... except 3D.

Wayne is correct though. Since you're using x86 (Windows 32-bit) the only way to push Maya past your 1.5GB barrier is to switch to a 64-bit version of Windows. I personally suggest Win7 x64. It's devastating and handles memory very, very well. I don't know if the RC is still available, but the final release version hits the stores October 22nd, or (to Mac users) "D-Day". That's a joke, people.

I would also suggest adding or replacing your RAM. If you have two 2GB sticks, then add two more. If you have four 1GB sticks, shell out the money and go for 4 2GB sticks, putting you at 8GB total system RAM. In x64 Windows, that would give you over 7GB available for Maya and mental ray.

The difference is night and day.

But, if you're stuck with your 4GB RAM, at least the move to 64-bit would grant you access to another 1.5GB or so for Maya. I've had Maya top out at almost 4GB, with only 4GB installed, under Win7 x64. Which left Windows very sluggish, but at least it's allocating the RAM where I wanted it...

thanks a lot to both of you :)
I will shift to 64 bit OS first...
