View Full Version : Physique vs. skin?
ostov 08-08-2003, 11:16 PM I am going to pose and animate with charater studio 3.4. Should I use the normal skin modifer or Physique? I know Physique is made for cs, but skin is good to, right?

I personally prefer Skin... better performance, more third-party freebie scripts, more stable.

For the best results, I'm using both. Phisique for legs and arms and skin for the rest.

Until recently I would have said Skin due to the poppy problem in Phsyique, however this has been fixed (for the most part, i have seen it come up again however).
Physique is faster and gives a better result in a production environment where time is money.

I'd have to say that I prefer physique any day. The way that it creates splinelike links with parameters that can be modified and connects the verts to the links. Works a treat to be able to get things to twist and bend differently. In the past I've been able to get shoulders to work V nicely even in poses where a character is hanging from a ceiling beam by his arms. I found skin to be a less powerful and more fiddly way to rig a character. But then I've had a lot more experience with physique. I was scared off using skin when it was introduced in V2. It was seriously crashy. SO maybe I just haven't given it enough of a chance. But physique does everything I need very nicely indeed.

I am now using skin and it is cool. It work faster then Phsyique. If U wanne get a vertex or two to follow a bone u can just draw on the area. Also with bio skin u can mirror it so I dont have to copy and paste the weight (skin)?

I guess it ultimately comes down to personal preference, what works best for your situation. I'm glad there are alternatives, one of the great things about having an extensive scripting community.
BTW, here's a script I saw recently for Physique.

I've tried them both and I have ended up using Physique more, simply because it works hand in hand with Biped for quicker character animation setups.
However both basicly SUCK when you compare them to the ease of setting up skinning in Maya. I hope (but I doubt it) that Max will have looked at this for Max 6. I have not applied either Pysique or Skin to a model without haveing to spend hours (sometimes days) adjusting envelopes and vertice assignments.
Maya on the other hand has got it right. I still prefer Max because I use it every day but If I can get my company to look at Maya...well.
