View Full Version : Can We record a Modeling Session in Lightwave?

Okay...i had this little idea this evening which i thought might be kind of cool. Here's how it goes:

1. Imagine being able to record a modeling and surfacing session in Modeler.

2. Now imagine that you could play all of this back directly in Modeler or Layout.

3. Now imagine that you could Play and Pause and Stop this little movie which is playing back in Modeler or Layout by using a little Transport control.

The idea i had was that there would be this little recorder LScript or Plug-In which would be invoked by the user when they decided to record a session in Lightwave. After it was invoked, the entire session would be recorded to a little Text file which could then be distributed to Lightwave users who could then use the same script to open the Text file which would play the entire session back to them in Real Time or 2x real time...or whatever speed they chose directly in Modeler or Layout.

I know this idea isn't new by any means...Nendo did it, and ZBrush currently does this.

I have no idea how to create such a thing...but does anyone here have a clue where to begin?

I can fill in more details if anyone is interested in creating such a thing for our great community!

:)

Cman...are you up to the challenge?

Good idea of course ...
Softimage XSI does that too :D

Maybe is there a way to track events in the Lightwave SDK ?!
Dunno .. better ask plugin developpers...

Anyway ... I'm in if there's beta test .. Good luck

That's a great idea!!!! Man, if someone could build that, I would be really happy! Have you posted this on te newtek forums to? Maybe someone there is able to build this.

Neat idea! I know that procreate's Painter has this ability. Some of the scripts it ships with are really cool to watch, as you get to see exactly how the image came to be step-by-step.

that's the great thing about Softimage XSI, there you have a scripted construction history (you can copy/paste and write things in it) so you could exactly do what you asked for....Since version 5.0 I'm writing emails to newtek that they should finally add a better construction history in modeler and finally create one in layout....now we are at version 7.5 and still nothing happened. Somebody wise said: Lightwave is a powerful tool, but it still has missing some of the most basic features.

Um, Layout has something called LW_MacroRecorder (Master script), which lets you record your actions to a .ls file (Lscript). You could then manually run this or add it to your config. file to execute when Layout opens.

A little VCR-like interface should be simple to script, allowing you to play through the recorded file.

It appears that this cannot be done in Modeler, though. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...now if we could just get someone to add the extra bits and offer it up as a totally doable thing...we could really start swapping some great files to learn and evolve from.

i know i really liked those Nendo demos i saw...i learned a lot from them.

Why not just make screen-cap. videos or use the Viewlet Bulider for tutorials? If you can't learn from those, maybe you should go back to Playdoh.

i just want Lightwave users to be able to do this sort of thing right out of the box without any additional purchases.

it's a feature which should be a part of it...and a pretty cool one.

Sure i could use a Camtasia or similar product...but do you know how large these movies are if they run fairly long? Also...you usually can't get the entire LW interface when you use these type of tools. I know i can't...

So that's the reason.

is that reason enough for you?

Yeah, Lightwave should take out the garbage and wash the dishes too. Lets all e-mail Newtek and tell them to put this in Lightwave 8; it's a must have! :bounce:

damn CIM.

what gives.

you know that's beyond the scope of Design Software. Hell, i'd get my house wired with an experimental set of AI protocols before i'd let something like Lightwave do my dishes. I'd be too afraid that it would blow them up or melt them.
