so like modeling a classical sculpture with your face/body in place of the actual one?
or modeling a classically styled sculpture of yourself?...
i may be able to find time to come in and have a go at this one...as the course is winding down/finishing and i have some new zbrush skillz to flex...

The first one is the one I had in mind...
I just need now to come up with a list of sculptures we can use.

is it possible to include paintings?

What are you talking about? The David is already a self portrait of me! :D
Cool idea Roberto. Will this be going concurrently with the FXWars?

This sounds fascinating.
So something like the Painting from Ghostbusters II (http://img199.imageshack.us/i/ghostbusters2clean.jpg/#q=ghostbusters%20painting) or the old cover from To Hell With the Devil (http://www.thegauntlet.com/photo/Stryper-THWTD.jpg).
Edit:
Oh wait, I remembered that album cover differently in my mind. That is not quite the style I was thinking of. :D

i guess we'll have to wait for the official rules huh. I have a hard time choosing what to do cause it's unclear if it can be anything in a classical style, of has to be something really classical.
makes it exciting doesn't it.

Very exciting, I already know what I want to do. A holdover from the Louvre competition I didn't choose. I'll need to rethink if we are limited to a select list.

If there is a list I hope it includes the self portrait of albrecht durer because I already look like that. Or perhaps Jesus.

I think the Louvre posts images of all the works they have in their collection aswell, so check out their site:

Man, the Louvre is so amazing, I wonder what it was like when it was in use back in the 16th and then the 19th centuries during Napoleon. Now THAT would be a hardcore challenge ;)

The Louvre's atlas search is quite extensive. Plus it always gives you suggestions along with what you asked for.
Here is the Metropolitan Museum of Art (http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/index.asp?HomePageLink=works_l). Many great pieces here. If you use the search there is a category titled European Sculpture and Decorative Arts.

so does it have to be an actually existing classical portrait or can it be a classical style portrait but an entirely original one?

I'm definitely interested in this one, just curious what the rules will be. I've already got my eye on one possible image...

I ended up doing the sculpture of Elizabeth LeBrun instead of Caesar for the Louvre challenge.

Care to elaborate?
The topic is Classical Self Portrait.
You do a model of yourself
based on either
a) a Classic work of Art
OR
b) Influenced by classic works of art.
That is it.

I remain slightly confused about the 'classical' and 'classic' adjectives ... 'classical' to me means influenced by the Roman/Greek ancient art and the classical revival which basically drew directly on that ancient period. 'Classic piece of art' on the other hand can mean any period whatsoever. Could you make that one clear :)

Ahhhh. I may actually be able to participate in this one, then. My tablet was starting to get banged up from lugging to and from work, so i was going to shy away from this challenge (most of the artwork I do is at work-lots of downtime) because of the heavy sculpting I imagined from this challenge. If I can come up with something angular (picasso in 3d perhaps?) I might be able to polymodel the whole thing, or most of it. Thanks a bunch for this clarification Mag and Roberto.

We wait until the official posting before starting right? I mean no harm in getting a hold of some reference, but the challenge doesn't start until the official thread goes live?
Also, since I'm a beginner, but am quickly falling madly in love with Zbrush can anyone recommend a sculpture that would be challenging, yet simple/small enough for a rookie like me.

Collecting reference is fine but you aren't supposed to start until the official word.
Here is something you may find a good challenge.
