Hey all,

I'd love for anyone's input on the best practices for texturing terrain. I am using 3ds Max 2010...fyi.

Anyways, I have about a 30 acre piece of terrain that has been laser scanned...meaning the terrain is ACTUAL terrain. It has been polygonized and imported into 3ds Max.

But I'd like to know from terrain experts, the best practice for texturing.

Also, if anyone knows of tutorials for creating textures that show the grass-to-dirt transition (for terrain texture)...I'd appreciate some info on that too.

Thanks in advance!

Use loads of photos...in what respect?

I need to bring my terrain into a game engine.

Are you referring to breaking up the terrain into segments and texturing each segment?

I mean to use lots of photos to build your texture maps. If you need a transition between grass and dirt, for example, find photos of exactly that and work them into your textures.

Breaking up the terrain into segments is definitely the best way to get a detailed terrain. However, I am not familiar with working with game engines so I can't offer any advice as to working with that in mind.

Sounds like a lot of Photoshop work.

Thank you.
