View Full Version : Oscilloscope Effect
Danvenn 09-13-2009, 11:08 AM Hi guys
I'm trying to achieve a realistic oscilloscope effect using a glowdot following a path (simulating the electron beam) but I have no idea on how to go about implementing the idea. I'd like some help please =)
All documentation on this sort of thing uses glow effects on an entire waveform and I somehow see that as constricting..
Thanks alot!

Maybe you could try it with Trapcode particular?
You can animate the emitter position (or light) from left to right, and then add a wiggle expression (or key frames) to the vertical position. If you turn the particle velocity to 0, it should leave a line looking like an oscilloscope, and you can have a glowy dot at the end of it. The same might work for the other particle systems.
Or you could draw a mask and use the generate\stroke effect, by key framing the start and end parameters. (Same could work for Trapcodes 3D Stroke)
Or you could animate a "." on a text layer by assigning it the path, and animating the margins.
 so many options...

For now I'm using a looping beam effect set to 0.5% length but I may shoot a real trace at 60 fps and play about warping it - the trouble is working at standard frame rate with such a fast moving object
Thanks for all those suggestions, I think particular would help alot if I had access to it
Ill let you know how it turns out
