hi all,
it was a while since I made something here in the WIP forum of cgtalk,
so, I'm gonna try to give my latest concept a try.
mm, miam miam..
http://www.fellah.net/Images/2DGraphics/2DGraphics.MiamMiam_CrazyDragon.jpg

just putting it up right now to get some pressure on my shoulders, to actually start some modeling
so, update on the modeling soon(I hope  )

if you have any ideas on the concept that you would like to see/be changed in the modeling, feel free to add your opinion(s)

:wip:

I think it's great...my only comment would be to make sure the eyelashes a part of the eyelids in the model...looks a little wierd with the eyes half shut and the eyelashes still up top...other than that...it's great. Looking forward to seeing the model.:)

mm yes, all the pressure, it's almost to much already :D thanks for passing by.

kenneth
hah! I brought you out from your recent long time lurking! I feel so proud, thanks! hope to see more from you, (and leekman? ) soon.

remi
oh, I drew him with his eyes in another "pose" from the beginning, and changed it to this current one just before posting it, but somehow totally forgot about the lashes. I didn't see it until you mentioned it. will be fixed i in the 3d model, aswell as the concept(sooner or later), thanks for the extra pair of eyes :)

here's tonights update. no great renders, I hope these screenshoots(with a little contrast in PS) will do for now..

Hey nice character design.
About the 3D model. In your picture the right eye of the
dragon seems to be a bit smaller than the left eye. That's
really great but in your 3D model they have the same size.
As you know heads are not symetrical.
I would really change the size of the right eye. The dragon
would look very funny and interesting.
Check out Roger the Cat on my website in the projects area
The size of the eyes are different.

hey Goro, that's a very good idea. I like characters with that kinda variation in eyeSize to, it can add a great deal. I thought about following that part of the concept for this dragon, but wasn't sure.. now I will definitely try. I just needed someone to say/confirm it, thanks :)

Always very nice to see more of your creative and fun art fellah. The concept looks to be a winner, and I look forward to your 3D version very much.I'll be back to see what you come up with.........................I am sure it will be another fantastic piece, both technically and fun wise.See you then.

thanks alot virtuoso, for your kind words and the pat in the back. always inspiring to read something like that :)

here's an update of the model, still just screenshoots.. but it should be enough to crit proportions etc..

WOW!!! fellah
your characters are just fantastic. including this one...
but i must say, i kinda like concept art dragon better. i just thinks it looks a bit more funny to me:thumbsup:

fellah
08-13-2003, 01:45 PM
abyss103,
I agree, the concept is still better.. cannot put my finger on why though. maybe it's the pose/expression and the crappy render. or, the big head.. I will do my best to get the 3d version to be better in the end though, thanks for the input :)

rasmusW
08-13-2003, 01:54 PM
your welcome!!!

i think, the thing that makes the concept funnier, is probaly the way the arms and legs looks. they kinda got a much smoother look...

Goro

Hey it looks a lot better now! Really cool.
But somehow your illustration looks even funnier.
I don't know why.

Keep up the good work!!

cool work so far, give him (or her??) a better pose and render it with better light, but you're still the best toon modeller i know great work so far!

tubby
09-14-2003, 12:20 AM
wow, great work fellah. I really love how close the model is to the concept. The reasone I thinkt he concept still looks better is because the model's head is too small. The large head in the concept makes the toon look really strong and to me the model's head is much smaller. Also, the legs are too long on the model, and too defined compared to the concept. stubbier legs like the concept would help a lot. Great seeing your work buddy, take care!

crazy german, that was some high rankings!! (probably because I know you? :D ) I hope I will be able to finish the things you mentioned soon, but this boring unwrapping process always seem to stop me at personal projects..

tubbyloo
I'm gonna give it a go and see how it looks. I was unsure about those things, but it's always better to do it and see it than trying to imagine it. I'm very glad to have these pointers. thanks alot, glad you found the thread :)

Kewl! Very nice design!
If I may nitpick with the model, I think the legs have lost a lot in translation. THey work so well in your drawing as more-or-less formless tubes, in 3D you've brought in knee and calf details.

great work man ;)
i wish i could see how this dragon learn to fly ^^

fellah
11-20-2003, 07:08 PM
thanks, stenosis. I had a fly-sequence idea in mind for this character a while ago, so maybe you'll see him trying to fly, someday :)

here's an update. I tried to go back to the concept, with the simple legs and the big head, as a few of you pointed out earlier.

here's the update,

Maybe it's cool to give the dragon a rubber/silicon skin?

fellah

dobermunk, abyss, orozimbo
big thanks for your support!! :)

shoey
hey thanks! I think the changes are in the right direction to. all thanks to the suggestions made earlier in this thread which prove to be to big help. btw, love your latest character for alienz!!

Rano
yes, might be a good idea. but that would almost require SSS. which would increase rendertimes tons. I will see, thanks for the suggestion!

I will try to have an update soon, I'm currently trying to learn how to use normal-maps for the spots on his body.. already starting to get the hang of it so it shouldnt take to long, I hope :)

thank you all once again!

11-24-2003, 06:06 AM
WOOHOO!! great, you did some more work on the draggy.

azazel
11-24-2003, 08:22 AM
You know, using some SSS on the ears and wings should give a nice effect. Still, it's a great piece of character :)

tubby
11-24-2003, 08:32 AM
hey that looks a LOT better with the changes. i love his feet! really great work buddy! Can't think of anything to help other than maybe the concept's lower chest area looks a little fatter, I think its because the model's chest area right below the arm kinda slims in taking away from the chubby look found in the concept. impressive work as always Fellah, just writing to bug you and say "hello!" :)

fellah
11-24-2003, 11:18 AM
drakaran
thank you!

hey azazel
it's a good point. but lightwave dosent have any good/fast solution for SSS yet, as far as I know. but I will try to fake it a little, maybe some translucency can help as the surfaces are pretty flat. I think I will give it a try, thanks!

tubbyloo
hey mate, glad to hear from you again!! :)
I think I will keep the slim part under his arms as I think it will make future posing/animation easier. but if it dosen't, I will go back to the concept at this part.
I hope all is well with you and that everything is going in the right direction! :)

you should read up on translucancy cause this is exactly what you need for the see through-but-not-transparent stuff. As far as fast? I'm not really sure what ya mean. There's a lot of stuff LW does where they just have a different name for it than other packages.

Actually, I'd rather you didn't do translucance on this. it's supposed to look like a plastic toy thing, isn't it? if not, ya got a LONG haul on the textures and then, with the cartoony expression..... I just don't see it fitting. there is always some new gimmick that is the popular trick to do, it's finding appropriate use; and here, I'd say it's not really needed.

really, best thing is just stick to concept. it's fresh and fun.

fellah
11-25-2003, 08:27 AM
thanks you all for your inputs!

phreaknasty
don't think I've posted a wire yet, so here you go.
Wire (http://www.fellah.net/temp/CrazyDragon.Wires1.gif)
still needs a few more polys in some of the "bending areas".

MiGa
thanks for the tip! but I dont think it will add anything to her personality. and it will also make animation harder later on. so I will probably skip it, we'll see.

Drakaran
if you find anything that can make or fake SSS in lightwave, while still being able to use "shading noise reduction". I would be very glad to hear it, I've searched/waited along time for it, but found nothing good so far.

I'm gonna try to get somewhere inbetween a toy/real thing. textures will come, not very complex though. just some spots and maybe some colorvariations to the skin.. I will see/try what I'm gonna do and how it will look. thanks for the input!

dobermunk
11-25-2003, 08:34 AM
Make or fake SSS!?!?
Do you have G2? I've been playing with some fast and furious shaders in this direction - very cool!
(Personally I see your dragon more in a softer look :-)

That fake skin shader is also good. Check out flay.

fellah
11-25-2003, 11:45 AM
dobermunk
big big thanks! I DL'ed that "fake skinshader" from flay.com and played around with it. and I must say I'm very happy with the results it's given so far. this might not be a 'sss' look to 100% though, but I like the look more than before.
but it has some disadvantages, reflection-blurring ain't working, shading noise reduction ain't working.. and there's probably more, but I haven't noticed it yet.

here's the result after 30min of playing around, only 2 lights so the renders are very fast!
http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.4.jpg
I'll see if I can tweak some more, I'll try to add a little extra to the yellow of the wings and ears. and then it's time for the textures..

dobermunk
11-25-2003, 11:56 AM
That's looking hot!
I use G2, so you can control reflection blur and those things from within the plug-in.

fellah
11-25-2003, 01:31 PM
dobermunk
mmm, G2. I've heard good things about it. I will check it our more and see if it's worth it.

updated the pic above, added a little fake sss on the wings and ears(thanks to 'azazel' for the fake sss tip he gave me)
I will play with it more later.

MikaelPersson
11-25-2003, 01:54 PM
so you're still at it.. Nice.
Have you tried having slim arms all the way? Or thicker all the way? I am not that fond of those big underarms, but that is a very personal opinion.
Gives me ideas for a animation collaboration this :).. I got a male version of a similar dragon.

Hoppas att vi inte behöver vänta lika länge på nästa uppdatering :)

cheers.

hey Mikael, glad to see you here :) thanks for your suggestion about the arms! I did a little rework and here's the thick armed version
image (http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.4.2.jpg)
I like it, but I cannot tell which version is best right now, to much staring at the same piece today..

Thin arms look much better. Much more 'stylish'. Off course this is just a matter of taste :)

MikaelPersson
11-25-2003, 04:40 PM
Hi,
I hear what you are talking about. Matters like that makes you blind so fast. But I think it is better. But a very hard chocie indeed. For me part of the problem lays in the thick hands.
My suggestion would be to slim these new arms and hands down slightly. Not much, just a tiny bit so the difference between her throat and arms isn't this big.
The fact that you had the same size relationship between upperarm and throat before appealed to me.
I hope you are even more confused now. :)

To see who she would meet, go here (http://www.zen22843.zen.co.uk/demo/el.draco.jpg) I hope you dont mind me posting a link like that.

http://www.stickman.de/content/temp/g2_sss.jpg

Not that skin kind of stuff but here's an sss example I'm working on. 6 spotlights - only one has raytracing on. Render times at Pal, no AA is under 30 seconds (there are three characters and this gummi-bear substance).

SKin stuff can be well done in good render times. G2 pays for itself alone in the rapid response of surface tweaking. my onion. uh, my opinion ;-)

That free skin shader is cool too, I just have to keep all my projects under 4 minutes a frame for production.

fellah

I take that back!!! :D

here's a new tweak to the arms, a little inbetween the first and last, like you described (I hope :) )
http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.4.3.jpg

the old(above, thicker arms can now be found here (http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.4.2.jpg) for comparison)

btw, I remind that dragon of yours!
I think I posted a reply a year ago or so in a thread where you had an animation with him!
I've decided my dragon is gonna be a female(eyelashes :) ), so maybe someday when I finish my model(hmm.. never? :D ) we can make an animation. a big horny female-dragon and a little scared male-dragon.. miam miam, beurk :)

LOL.
well, you see when you put it up for critique you get exposed to my indecisive brain.

I think this new one looks a lot better, there is some consistency now. But do as you said, leave it for a couple of days.
Yes, I did post it here in the forums ages ago. Have been meaning to do something more with him... And we all know how that goes.
Haha, yes she has the face of someone who has eaten something big so that animation would be nice :))

yes! :D the only hard part would be to get him through her throat :) (maybe I'll have to open another way in? nonono, biark!)

I'll leave her a day or 2, or 3 or 4.. and get back with a fresh eye, crits and comments are still welcome(except from ppl whos name starts with a 'Mika' :))

Wow Fella! It´s great as it was in the first version. The little crazy dragon is getting better and better.

In my opnion this process can take an eternity, when you will settle down the project? I have just this problem, I´m never satisfied!

Ok, I´m gonna point this suggestion just to say I gave my contribution (´cause I think this little crazy is already perfect!). The style has a lot of moviment, all lines are sinuous but the holes in the wings and ears, it´s just circles. What about put a sinuous holes too, maybe bigger too. Just a comment...

Woow fellah....I've completly miss your thread. I'm not here as often as before.
Anyway I really like this one. The modelling is always subtle. The Overall shape is simple but with special details that make it so cool....The final curves of the ears and the wings, the "Make Up" around the eyes, the tail, the belly stipes etc....
I didn't read above I'm sorry, so I don't know if someone as already talk about that, but I would add a little bit more definition in the hands and the foot.

keep Up

mm, yes! I'll see what I can do about that. maybe I will remove a hole, or change their sizes a little. thanks! :)

orozimbo
thanks man! I agree, sometimes it's very hard to leave a project in time :)
I'm not sure about making the holes more "sinuous". I like the circles, very simple shapes.
but I will try to change their sizes a little.

hey stip! thanks alot for your comment! glad to hear from you again, long time since last.
noone has pointed out the definition in the hands and feets before, I will try to add more of it and see how it looks.

Indeed. I visit your site regularly and I must say...your talent is impressive!

Did you ever try to work with 3D Max? If yes, what are, in your opinion, the differences between 3DMax and Lightwave?

Hey, what about an animation of this happy dragon?

indigo,
ofcourse! :)

carnera,
thanks alot :)

MacSilva
I saw you posted in a few of my other threads to, I really appreciate it, thanks!
I have only tried max a little, mostly for lighting and unwrapping, so I cannot help alot there, sorry.
would love to animate the dragon some day, but first I need to finish him :)

waw, long time since last update.. :)
http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.5.1.jpg
question.. if anything, what shall I put in his right hand?
there are alot of options, my first thought was a very little dragonslayer/knight.. could serve well as 'scale-reference' to the dragon, but might also be to classic. maybe some drink for his throat.. ideas are much welcome, as are crits on the current model.

hehe so nice.
He looks so happy/satisfied so it should be something he has fought for. A gold ring? A mouse? A princess?
I like your orange and SSS on it. Does suit your green very well. But that purple? I am not so sure about that. Maybe just desaturate it to the same level as the skin? Or go for a blue...
When I have been seeing your dragon I've always thought of it as a female. But you refer to it with a him. I am not saying you should give him something stereotyped to tell he is a male. But maybe make it a tad more obvious.

sweet... getting better with age...

i was thinking maybe putting a match in his hand, he looks goofy like he cant start his own fire, so he'll need matches

nice work fellah, love it.

its about time you finished him :)

why don't you put a flower in his hand?

and why aren't you at the 3dfestival?

My first thoughts:

1) a worm (more exactly - half a worm) in an apple. Mmmm.

2) a wacom pen. You could probably use some endorsement money, right?

3) If he's going to be holding a knight, then not the Knight in shining armor, but rather the prince in distress. Then some Knightess could come and save him, making the dragon cry and then she (the Knightess) changes her mind and leaves the dragon her spoiled little toy-boy. Namely, the dragon looks like a great dragoness!

4) a mirror

5) a broken mirror (even more flattering)

Any good?

thank you all, I really like your suggestions so far!

mikael,
yea, that purple is not exactly what I wanted, this lighting setup changed the color some. this is what I would like it to look like: click (http://www.fellah.net/temp/Fellah_CrazyDragon.WIP.5.1.2.jpg)
it's a little more dark-purple/blueish, not totaly though. I want it to be able to stand out from a potential blue sky later on.
about the 'sex'. really strange.. it's supposed to be a female, as I believe I mentioned earlier :) but it was such a long time ago since I worked on her, so I forgot :)

pureprplaya,
thanks, very nice idea about the match.

shoey,
hey, I was close to go to 3dfestival this time. nearly got the tickets cheaper, but no luck.. my current budget wasn't good enough so I had to leave it, to many trips planned already. are you there now? or busy with other things?

dobermunk,
thanks for all the suggestions! a worm and apple is a little to common, among the first things I thought about to.
a wacom pen is good, though not what I had in mind. would make it look like a commercial piece somehow :)
I dont understand what you meant with the 3'rd suggestion :) but I figured out it had to do with characters, and when I thought about it a little more I figured it wouldn't be a good idea to model another character for this piece as the dragon took me almost 1-year to finish! :D
I like the broken mirror alot though! thanks for the tips mate!

BartokD,
thanks you. I guess she's almost finished. I will play with her a litte more, try a few poses etc.. but model wise, pretty much done.

Nice character Fellah! I love your style!
I suggest a female underwear of some lady that your dragon kidnapped! hahaha
It´ll be funny

Hey fellah!! The model looks great, I really love this character, such a goofy personality. I think it would be funny to have her holding an ice cream cone with 3 huge scoops of colorful icecream, maybe even melting down her hand a bit, and maybe put dragonslayers as sprinkles on the ice cream, but that might look weird. Either that or a huge chocolate bar. Ok buddy, just wanted to tell you I love the model and give her some ice cream!:)

I see what you mean about that purple. But I am still not really convinced. I tried fooling around with the colours a bit in photoshop click (http://www.zen22843.zen.co.uk/temp/fargforslag.jpg). And realised how hard it was. Two tame ones, and that pink which I quite like.

thanks everyone!

mecman,
hahah yes another cool idea, thanks :)

tubby,
hey mate, glad you stepped in. I've gotten so many cool ideas about what to put in his hand. icecream also fits well for his 'firey/hot' throat, something to cool down with :)

micke,
thanks for taking the time to do that, I think it's a choice between the original and the pink. I have always liked pink and green together. but I must say the original still wins a little in my eyes :-< but it can be because I've stared at it for so long and gotten used to it. I want the tail spikes to have contrast with the rest though, so the 2 in the middle was a little to far away from what I had in mind.

The trunk is already making it look like he isn't that huge. So if you put a little dragon slayer (that would be cool!) remove the trunk. If you do that you will HAVE to make a small landscape with trees and such with him sitting there, holding the dragon slayer. Maybe put his horse somewhere in there too, not even caring about the situation;)

pureprplaya
05-05-2004, 03:42 PM
^^ur right, i didnt even think of that... good catch...

the horse would be hilarious... maybe while the horse stands there have him eat grass and drink water from a lake... maybe even comfortably go to sleep

thank you all ! :)

shoey you lucky man :( I sure hope you take alot of pictures that you can show us when you are back, have fun! :)

Phil
you gave me a few good ideas for a scene there. I might try to sketch up a simple envirinment, maybe a knight and horse to. I'll let the idea rest a day or so and see if it stills feels appealing to do a complete scene then(lots of work). thanks alot!

naaaaa

he should have a warm cup of tea... :)
and speak with a huge english accent.

the small angry soldier down the tree would go like :
-"come on dragoon, fight !!!!"

-"I can't it's tea time...come back later"

he should have a matchstick in his hand. a big one (used)

fellah
06-05-2004, 08:48 PM
incredible baby,
a cup of tea is very good! but it reminds me about "the reluctant dragon" a tad to much. he just wanted to drink tea and write philosophy while the knight wanted to fight to get a good reputation, or something like that I believe.

BlinkOk,
yea, that idea has been mentioned, I like it alot.

SpiritWalker
06-05-2004, 09:11 PM
maybe put him on a couch, sleeping, remote in relaxes hand and tv infront of him? u can call it "Day of the dragon- or maybe not"

^^

hmm, no horse, yes knight, and the dragon puts his arm on the knights head, and the knight is trying to hit the dragon but he cant reach because the dragon is holding him back. and the dragon isnt even looking at him, his just reading a newpaper, or drinking tea.

more idea's u say laddy? righty then

exchange the dragon with the dog in the bathtub scene ;D

well thats it (for now)

like always u have an incredible modeling skillz, keep it up!
wonderful work man!
