Errhh...what software are you using to convert ?
Try Polytrans :)

.3ds --> Maya .mb
for 3DS 4 and higher to Maya 4.0 and higher.
Thnx, where can i find Polytrans? Does it not have the same problems?

Hmmm... Not exactly free though. Does this solve the problem with the smoothing groups?
Do other users experience this same problem?
