View Full Version : 3 bend or even more ?
pasto 08-08-2003, 03:29 PM Hello,
I have put 3 bend deformers in the same group in order to deform 3 times a plane.
See the little movies for understanding the problem I found with 3 deformers.
What can I do to avoid the strange deformation with 3 bends, is there any limitation to this ??
thanx

2 deformers (http://www.mayalounge.com/2b.mov)

Is your third deformer set to "Unlimited"? That might be the problem.

No Adam
I tried every configuration, they are all limited. The deformation acts on the "begining" of the plane strangely.
thanx anyway.
I am really stuck on this.
Any workaround ?

I can't think of a workaround offhand, except you could use MSA to get the same effect if you have the plugin or don't mind buying it.

I have it Adam
Much longer to configure than simple bend though...

thanx a lot Adam

make sure the orange handle points towards where you want the plane to "exit" the deformer. its not the third deformer, it's the direction it's pointing that's the problem.

Thanks Artemesia. That's good to know.:)

thanx artemesia, that's good but not completly efficient, I get always the same problem with 6 bends, is there an angle limitation ?
see the image please.

Huh? You can do this in 5 minutes with MSA! Less even.

hmmm. the probelm isn't the total number of bends: it seems to be that the bend deformer considers everything within the arc radius to be included in a limited bend. see image. more of a bug than a feature i'd say. :hmm:
for what you're trying to do wouldn't you be better off using a spline rail deformer anyway? there's a good example called splinerail.c4d with a plane going through some rollers on the c4d disc.

You figured out the limitation Artemesia.
I guess it is the way the bend works, I will try in maya, but I guess it will be the same.
Yes Adam I know it is quite simple in MSA but there some other limitations (one object a a time) that bend hasn't.
Thanx so much for your help guys.
It is always a pleasure to learn things here.

Pasto: It's super simple in Maya, you don't need a deformer (in the strict sense of the word) to do that, just use Animate>Motion Path>Attach to motion Path to link the object to a path, and then force the object to take on the shape of the path by using Flow Path Object. Of coursef, you need a path, but I don't think that you will have troubles drawing one :)

Thanx a lot Bramelo
quite the same method as msa in c4d.

i'm not sure if i see the problem here so much, why not just use the sweepnurbs object to sweep a rectangle along the path you need?

Yes Sadie, I didn't do that because the bends gave me great facility of use for regular angles (45° and 90°), I put several planes in the same group with the deformers in it etc... so once I have my path I just tweak the planes to get some graphic composition with it. I will post the movie if you want.
thanx a lot.

Problem with sweepnurbs is that you can only control growth from 0-100%. Sure would be nice if it had a start% and end% instead.
