been using softimage for the last 5 years, i LOVE softimage but work is not going to buy my my own copy when i'm the only one who uses it and i dont wanna spend 3k myself so i was looking at something much cheaper for work. my friend next to me uses silo which he really recommends at $150 and i think modo is under $1k? but my real question is, any softimage users out here who have made the jump to modo and would they recommend it? things they like about modo that xsi dont have or vice versa? looking for some opinions from users who know how good softimage is and would they recommend modo? i know abit about modo, watching a video on vimeo now, its very impressive but if i'm going to purchase this out of my own pocket i want something that will let me do all i can do in softimage. thanks guys.

I used Modo and Softimage first thing i have to say is try the demo it has a different flow to Softimage and you will get the feel of it in afew hours and see how different it is and well i think you may like it

for me it's better at organic modeling ( hardbody i prefer softimage BUT you can do it in Modo without issues )

render is abit more straight forward then MR at the start,.. BUT the layer system is silly in 2009 Hopfully one day Modo will get nodes....

UV mapping is useful , ( i prefer Softimage in some area and prefer Modo in others )

the best bit is texture painting very good simple and well you don't have that in Softimage.

Anyway for Modeling Modo has taken most of my time from Softimage ( but not all )
as for the other features feel it out and enjoy the demo

I'm using both. I've been using xsi for a few years now and I also love it. I just started using Modo a few weeks ago. Overall I'm very happy with Modo. At the end of the day though xsi is still a more robust and feature complete package than Modo. What I'm doing right now is using both apps side by side. I'm setting up modeling and rendering my scenes in modo, but posing characters and generating some cloth models etc.. in xsi.

Comparing with xsi 7.01.. a few notes

- texture and materials are very different but quite good in modo as well, offering some advantages and disadvantages. Modo uses an approach similar to photoshop layering. There are no nodes. But the layering approach makes certain things easier.
- Similar for modeling. Both apps are good. Modo does some things in a much nicer and easier way, but there are certain xsi approaches I miss. Modo seems slightly more cumbersome with the clicks but slightly more friendly with the toolset. The main difference here though is the stack of operators. Modo has no history of this sort. Whatever you model is done. It's like you're always in Immediate mode.
- IMHO UV tools in modo are way superior. Very nice unwrapping and projection etc..
- Modo has painting and sculpting tools. I'm not a huge fan of these so far but I haven't played with them that much. I mostly use zb for scupt and paint though.
- rendering in modo is very strong. I'm quite impressed with the renderer. Easy to configure and use and produces beautiful results. Much easier to setup than mental ray.
- Animation. Modo lets you do quite a bit here but there's no enveloping or skeletons for character animation. You could rig a robot easy, but a cartoon character or animal etc... you're better off sticking with xsi for that.
- Modo has no compositing. You'd have to do that in post in photoshop or after effects etc... But you can render out a number of masks and passes.
- Replicators in modo are very cool. I cant imagine life without replicators now.
- No particles, physics or cloth sim in modo yet
