I don't know if Autodesk changed the old license agreement, but typically (of their software) you can't resell your license, so you won't be able to buy it from anyone but an authorized dealer.
Best bet is to call around to resellers and find out pricing - but don't get your hopes up for a huge percentage off. Also, there's no Advanced/Essentials split anymore, it's just Softimage 2010.

This isn't true. They still sell advanced, but did a very poor job advertising it in the initial press about 2010.
Softimage used to allow the transfer of license but Autodesk does not except in very rare cases. Softimage is gonna run you ~$3000 + 795 subscription and Softimage Advanced will run you ~$5000 + $1295 subscription. There might be slight discounts but they will not be much.

I thought I read somewhere that a personal license of SI/XSI can be installed on your work machine, too, allowing you to use your own license at both home and work. Maybe only 3dsmax permits it, not sure.

Yeah, pretty sure you can request a second license for use at different locations.
