View Full Version : noob help - lighting a forest scene (day)
mikefeil 08-08-2003, 12:52 PM Hi,
I know it looks crap but I'm a noob.
Well I got GI_Joe going on this but the render times are just stupid..this one image took 6 hours on my 733p3 with 320 megs ram, gf2mx.
Anyway what are some better lighting techniques I could use...and how can I lower render times (I have used maya's render diagonostics) since I will probably need to make an animation with this forest.
Cheers peeps :)

Well the default brushes in paint fx (ie grass) can knock up some major render time if your not carefull . One thing I would certainly look into is using the layers method ' do a search on layers in maya' .
I think that u have at least 2 different types of grass in the pic so if you split your grasses into 2 separate layers and put your geometry into another layer so that you have 3 layers, you can then test render each individual layer (grass1,grass2,geometry ect ect) and spend more time testing the colours ect. This is really really important it will save u so much time in the long run .
Also if you select your grass and open up the atribute editor then lower the level of detal down while your testing your lighting it will lower your test renders down considerably .
Seems to me you might be rushing in to the deep end a little too fast take your time and learn as many of these little shortcuts as possible before you hit that render button .... :buttrock:
