I need a lil help texturing and lighting this little guy...
It needs to be done in mental ray and needs to look as real as possible (in a cartoony kinda way, in other words....go nutz but make it look like its in real world lighting) as i need to composit it in some real footage we took on the road next to our building.
I need ANYONE to help because Im not too clued up on mental ray, so thought i could give this to someone to work on and learn from what they have done. (lighting and texturing wise)
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated

well rabbits usually have fur, so you could work with hair and fur though it's a bit renderhigh. other than that you need some translucency in the ears; sss comes to mind. if you decide not to use hair and fur you should try out a rough shader such as the standard oren-nayar-blinn with maps. tho if you want realism you'll need real fur

realism in the sense of the bunny isnt THAT important...mainly getting the bunny to fit in the scene.
Thats Y the bunny looks crazy :P he could be BRIGHT PINK, but must just fit :P
on the other side...i did put a SSS shader on the ear bu doesnt seem to work, not too clued on getting it looking right :(

Regardless, I still think it would look the sweetest with fur :)
Also, to get the sss to shine through (unless the settings are really bad) experiment with a strong backlight to get that
try to turn off all lights except the backlight to see how it works
examples of translucency in the ears:

:curious:
Hold on a moment here. this looks like a paying job you're working on, right? So you want someone else to do the work so you can give it to the client and get paid for it? or do i have that wrong?
if you can't do the work, why take on the job in the first place?

lol...no no no...
This isnt a JOB at all, its just a small in house project we working on... short compositing clip, nothing more, its video footage we shot of the road nexto the building where the camera pans up and all we doing is adding in a multitude of different bunny like creatures into the scene....different colours, different styles....whatever.
main thing is that my shading and lighting skills arnt that great when it comes to mental ray, so I want to learn by example and see what techniques other people use to get realistic results on a not so realistic character...or any object for that matter.

ahh....but the question is, what would you do for me? I can do as you request...but would require some animations in return.

If you're going to animate it I think you need fur so houdini or maya would be good solutions to create this in... however you can use transparency maps to create a sort of fur look, google fur transparency maps and you should be able to find some.

MasonDoran: some animations hmm??? in what vain? animate the bunny and send you the final fully animated scene or the final render only, or one bunny animated? or just the skeleton... :P (I could go on all day :D)
rdane1010: thanks for the tip/idea, I will look into it. I wanted to initially go with Hair&fur, but thought that the rendertime would be WAY too much, and Hair&fur (max's that is) doesn't like me much...
So i decided to go on a more cartoony or plasticy look for the bunnies...just gotta get it looking right in the scene. But will try out the faked fur maps :P
