If you ask how to make animation in maya, then the answer is: batch render and then virtualDub (for instance) to make it a movie file.

If you ask how to publish it: vimeo or youtube :)

well its not about the publishing (i know how to do that), its the middle step of how to make a video to post on the web.

thanks!
but now i have a problem with rendering. It will only redder one frame and not the whole thing and also my scene looks washed out from the lighting but i can fix that latter.

I can`t check it in Maya now, but in Render options you can set the range Maya will render. That should do the trick :)

thanks again... arg! seems like the more i try to tinker with my concept character i see more things wrong, now the textures i have for him don't show up when i do the render but i think its cause i just moved the my base scene to another file.

oh and also i found some of my old school files and notes so i should be figuring out some of the smaller things.

Ok, You might need Quicktime pro for my way... But there are other ways around it I'm sure... I'm sure there are others out there on "Google" that this might help. And, well... if us Artists don't help each other I don't really expect anybody who lives in the "Real World" *wink* *wink* to help us.

1.) First off, in "render settings" under "File name prefix" name your animation what you want it to be called. I wouldn't use numbers because it will probably confuse the import later on. (Image Sequence)

2.) Next, under image format, select tga as your file format. I like to use this because if something goes wrong while you are rendering you can start right where you encountered an error instead of rendering the whole sequence again...

3.) Next, under "Frame/Animation.ext" choose "name.number.ext" (This will allow you to import an image sequence later on...)

4.) Next, under "Frame Padding" if you have 100 frames put "3" if you have 1000 frames put "4" if you have 20,000 frames put 5. (get it Vern?)

5.) Next, under "Frame Range" put the begining frame and the end frame that you want to render out.

6.) Next, under "renderable cameras" select the camera view you want to use for your render... If you want to render multiple cameras select add camera and select another to render also.

7.) Next, go to "Image size > Presets... and I suggest rendering under HD 720 so you will have a decent render quality. This is pretty standard for widescreen demo reels. If you want full quality you can go up to HD 1080, but render time will take even longer. You could choose Targa NTSC for a faster render but I always render a final render in HD 720 or HD 1080 because it takes much less time to encode 1080 or 720 to a smaller resolution in Quicktime then to render the whole thing out again if you need it to be in a higher resolution. HD 720 is pretty standard for a good demo reel... Do it right the first time

8.) Next, in the top left corner drop down, go to your rendering menus... Then select "Render > Batch Render." This should start your render of your animation.

9.)After your render is finalized... Then on your computer OS go to windows documents > Maya > Projects > Default (or whatever your scene folder is called) > Images... This is where your render images should be...

10.) open up Quicktime pro and go to "File > Open Image Sequence" Or use after effects and go to "Import and select the first render frame from your folder in step 9 where your renders were saved...

11,) Next, If you are in quicktime pro Save it then go to "File" > "Export for web" and save a web version for Youtube or vimeo or whatever... If you're in After Effects Drag your image sequence from the project tab to the composition window and go to "File > Export > Quicktime Movie > Settings > Compression Type (choose none) > Compressor (choose best> click ok > Click ok on the next box... Select the location you want to save it and click Save... Let 'er render... After your done with the render open the .mov file in Quicktime and go to "File" > "Export for web" and save a web version for Youtube or vimeo or whatever...

Hope this helps... Let me know if you have any problems. Good luck!

Cheers!

Johnny
