Hi All, can xpressionist work with this program?

http://www.psc.edu/Packages/StarSplatter_Home/

I haven't used xpressionist at all. My brother is using Povray with starsplatter... I'm curious if I could slowly work with EIAS 5.5, and xpressionist 2 and the starsplatter program on a Mac.

Thanks,

Mike

I haven't done any programing for a long time... last time was Perl back in '96.

The starsplatter program uses Tcl, so my question should have been, can xpressionist/EIAS interact with Tcl and this type of scripting?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

i just downloaded the package and according to the README file i doubt it´s possible what you like to do:

Quote:

StarSplatter is a renderer for particle data, specifically data
generated by SPH simulations. It is a python 'package' which provides
the ability to load datasets of particle or SPH data and render them.
There is a Tcl interface also, left over from revision 1.1, but it
doesn't currently support the full functionality of the package.

End of Quote.

So the Tcl stuff is only used for interface stuff. To build the program itself you need Python installed.

I believe also to render data in StarSplatter you need the mentioned Tipsy program or at least datafiles in this format.

P.S. back to your initial questions.

(maybe Jens can chime in here) I had never used xpressionist, so please correct me if i´m wrong, but i believe it is used for driving parameters within Animator, and does not provide a facility to load external data from files outside of Animator. I mean if this would be possible we would have already some cool file I/O programs etc. for Animator made with xpressionist, right...?

Regards
Stefan
