Hi Zac, nice to see you here :)
Nice images you have here, it's good you have this patient approach in painting from photos. You know, colors are not difficult at all, but the light is hell difficult. You can't understand it on its full complexity from start. You have to decompose the problem and add more dimensions as you understand more and more. At this stage, you would mostly profit from pencil drawing(outlines, gestures), really. Mass painting is something that is simply too complex for a beginner. I do colors only here and there just because I feel I am not prepared. I do recommend Andrew Loomis books : "Fun with a pencil", "Successful drawing", "The eye of a painter", ... (these are bibles for artist, you know (: )
That might sound weird to learn to draw by reading a book, yes it is :) You should really draw and not just read, but those book really encourage us to practice drawing the right way and keep enjoying it. You will explore the whole universe around you with that small piece of graphite.
Keep up buddy, I am looking forward to your next updates ;)
