View Full Version : Starting with Maya
snickrep 08-08-2003, 04:10 AM I have used/messed around with Lightwave 3D Discovery Edition, Cinema 4D XL R8, and Maya Personal Learning Edition 4.5. I was really planning on buying Lightwave or Cinema 4D for my mac. But Lightwave to me runs so much better on a PC than a mac. Well at least for me cause LW seemed to be clumsy on my mac. Maya PLE and Cinema 4D ran better on my mac. But I am thinking of just using Maya PLE and buying books/DVDs on it. I am only 15 and I know I have a while before I go to college. But I thought starting early and using Maya would be best since most colleges use it. So should I turn down the academic Cinema 4D for the free version of Maya PLE? Those watermarks can get annoying, but other than that I really think the whole idea of Maya PLE is great.

I agree with sticky blue , but at the same time I think it is important to familiarize yourself with a specific package and focus on doing your art in that package. All the packages you mentioned are really powerful, but I being a Maya person would definitely recommend Maya. I am in no way implying that Maya is a superior package, I'm merelyl just stating what I prefer and what I'd recommend.
Software discussion always manages to get exciting:rolleyes:
Oh yeah and I just forgot to mention, "Maya is by far the best package!!" J/K :)

I would have to agree with sticky :p lw c4d and maya are all excellent packages. Its too difficult to say which would be better for you ..... i basicly trawled the web 2 find out as much as possible about all the 3d packages and what environments they were used in mostly (although it is obviously hard to categorise as 3d is so multi funtional)
I went for the maya ple a year and a half ago when it first came out for too many reasons to list them all here i found it to be a good all rounder. Im happy with my choice.
MAINLY
.... I suggest you not ask peoples opinion on software and make up your mind yourself ... youve done well to test the products out yourself now its time too choose what too concentrate on based on the research youve done ....do you know what you want to do? games, film, web ect ect .... if your not sure what software to concentrate on then do more research about the different brands and how you think they could be best applied to what you want to do thats what being in 3d is about ... contantly learning :)
Hope this makes sense :)
