:annoyed: sure
Well, using your settings I had this result:
This is with the flat set to RBG, (15,15,15):

This is with the flat set to RBG (0,0,0):
http://www.m2estudios.com/Temp/RGB0.jpg
I changed nothing else.
So indeed, with a "black" flat, the caustics disappear!!!
Anyone know why???

Is the result proportionnal to the gray level, or does it turn caustic off only with 0.0.0 ? If so, I'll suggest using 1.1.1 value...
Sorry nothing clever....

Once upon a Time There was ....
A BLOODY CAUSTICS EFFECT!!!!
so last update
please render the file (http://digilander.iol.it/carlocki/Archivio%20Carlo/rings.zip) on your comp and cheking the settings tell me what you obtain
this is my resulting render
http://digilander.iol.it/carlocki/Archivio%20Carlo/ring4.jpg
Here's your scene rendered:
http://www.m2estudios.com/Temp/caustic2.000.jpg
Here it is rendered with flat set to RGB:15
http://www.m2estudios.com/Temp/caustic2.151515.jpg
Finally, here's the RGB:15, with a Levels adjustment in Photoshop to set black level of 15 to be zero:
http://www.m2estudios.com/Temp/caustic2.Levels.jpg
And that's the best I can suggest. If you download the last image, you'll see that the flat's black level is now zero with the adjustment - but the caustic effect is still present.
