I written to Nevercenter and they confirmed that Silo Mac fact export is not available now and no dateline for the feature updates as below:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We don't yet have a timeline for updates to the file format you mentioned. We will be, however, be revisiting many aspects of Silo in upcoming releases, so please feel free to check back later as the updates become available.

Thanks,

Silo is rumoured to be dead in the water. There hasn´t been an update in ages and they have taken the same approach to the user base as EITG....complete silence......so I wouldn´t be so upset about that.....at least you Mac guys have OBJ2FACT to fall back on. Maybe EITG should acquire Silo instead of wasting time with Amorphium......

If you followed the Silo forums for a while you should know how angry people where when they stopped developement of Silo a while ago, Not only this but the guys developing Silo found it even not appropriate to inform their user base in time, only after many complaints.

Sad but true.

Silo is IMHO a pretty dead app. and i would not count on what NC is saying.

Just curious all around. To this date what programs support fact other than form-z, EIM, Old Silo, Amorphium?

The bigger question what formats are you guys using other than FACT in EIAS? OBJ, DXF etc?

The complete PunchCAD product line, like ViaCAD, Shark etc. for example.

This NC statement might be misleading. I'm using Silo 2.1.1 on a Mac (PPC). Fact export works pretty well. UVs are exported from Silo, but object names are not. UV export was fixed in 2.1.1, it didn't work before. IIRC I read somewhere that Silo 2.1.1 behaves differently on Mac (Intel), though.

There is a list of Apps that support Fact export on the EIAS Overview page over at the EITG website.

Are you sure about Silo being a dead app.? They just posted something about supporting Snow Leopard. How often do you want them to update the program? How much should we be willing to pay? Should they update it like Autodesk, every year (even though they don't bring a lot of changes to the program)?

I said "IMHO"...

If you have read Veehoy´s post (the link refering to Jamchild´s post in there)
it tells me that they no longer devote their time to Silo as they did in the past. As i remember they are also developing apps for the iPhone and not only a game engine. So they have other priorities, it seems to me.

The .fac bug with Intel Macs is in there since the arrival of 2.1 and was many times disscussed on the forums (ask Felix). Did they ever fixed it in a timely manner?

I can also not imagine how they will handle free updates until 3.0 for 2.x customers and what they will include in them (without getting any rewards for, money wise). Will they port Silo again (for free?....) to a 64bit Cocoa app for Snow Leopard, or 64bit for Windows?

About the Snow Leopard bug, well that one is to obvious and they have finally to do something about it.

Hi,

Are you able to import a textured Obj file and export the file to fact with the UV Textured map intact with Silo 2.11 PPC?

Yes. Picture on the left is a textured obj imported in Silo. UVs were imported. The picture on the right is the fact-export from Silo, shown in Animator. The UVs are exported from Silo.

Can you paint/place a texture map onto the UV layout and have it import into EIAS with the map in position?

No, I can't do this --which doesn't mean it's impossible. Placing such texture maps accurately in Animator is very difficult.

It's easier for me to export obj from Silo and then use Obj2Fact and the "Make Texture Polygon" option to convert to fact. Obj export from Silo (including UVs) works well.

Look like object2Fact is the way to go. EIAS is such a nice hybrid renderer. The part that really pissed many users off( I am included) is the UV Map import and placement issue :banghead: .

Thank you all for the clarification.

One more question. Is texture placement into Silo Mac work well? After export the Model to fact from Silo and go through object2fact, Is the texture map came in intact without further repositioning?

Also is there any Modo user here that can reveal their UV workflow via Object2fact? Is it came in spot on?

In Silo, textures are automatically mapped to non-normalized UV space, that is
UV (0,0) = texture (left,lower) and
UV (1,1) = texture (right,upper).

This works very well (and I'd love to see a similar option in Animator). However, in Silo all textures are always placed like this AFAIK, so you can't choose a different texture position and orientation.
