Hiya

Sorry for being OffTopic but Im wondering if anyone here uses Paypal?

I been thinking about buying the Total Textures CD's from http://www.3dtotal.com/ for some time now, but the payment methods have turned me off.

Besides the Cheque and Credit Card option, the PayPal option is something I do not want to do. I've never signed up for Paypal because I simply don't trust PayPal, thanks to sites like http://www.paypalsucks.com/

Are sites like the above just scare-mongeres? I feel uneasy that a website is connected to my bank.

P.S I just looked at the sign up page, it seems it doesn't support english users! The signup page says
Country: U.S.A
with zip code option. Im live in england so that aint no good to me.

1) All large companies have hate websites, name any company and at least some people will hate them.

2) click the button which says Non-US signup.

I've used Paypal quite a bit with no regrets at all. It has generally been flawless service and very convenient... Definitely speeds up some purchases.

Ive used paypal also and have found no problems yet. Macintouch do report that there are scrupulous people out there spoofing Paypal and sending people these bogus e-mails asking them to re-enter their credit card numbers.

Its done like this and can work for any site out there so be careful (its not just paypal):

1) You usually trust the domain of the links you click. For example, if a link begins with http://www.paypal.com/[something additional here], you think its truly a paypal site.

2) However, there is a way of fooling people by using an old trick for password protected sites (including ftp). For these sites, you can log on by including your user id and password in this way:
http://userid:password@domain.com/etcetera

3) If the website however does not require a password, everything before the @ sign gets ignored.

4) This means that I can put in a fake domain as the userid as such - http://www.paypal.com:12345667@123.456.789/cgi.pl?command=value

5) In the case above, www.paypal.com is the userid and gets ignored. the real domain is 123.456.789, which is an ip address and can also work in place of the more usual domain names.

6) What this means is you need to be extra careful if you see a colon or the at sign somewhere in the URL (some really bright ones might even use an URL escape character instead of : and @, so be on the lookout for long URLs with no backslash after the supposed domain), it might be a trap. macintouch reports that clicking one such e-mail brings you a site that is an exact replica of Paypal.

Since this trick can used for any site including auctions, just be careful.

Thanks for your replies. I must admit, I see alot of websites that use PayPal for there billing purposes so if PayPal was all bad, so many people wouldn't be using it.

Monty: Thanks for that info, something like that would of probably tricked me. Not now though :shame:

i have used them once, and it was fine, except i had to pay a small charge for the pleasure of using them. I mean I know they have to earn money and all, but it still anoyed me. I did not have a worry about security though. I do get mail from them to try and sign me up to some 'gold' service that will make my life heaven, but i must pay for that privelage, so that is also a bit annoying.

I've used it for freelance work payments, seems to work fine, they charge you initially to make sure your card is legit, but then they pay you back

I've used it a couple of times without incident.

I mostly use my credit card... they have a NetAccess account that I can go into and get a "one time" randomized credit card number and just for the amount I need. It is much safer than using my "real" credit card when I shop on-line.
