I think I posted the ninja here before, but I've had some more time to experiment with it. I've also been playing Zelda for gamecube in the meantime and gotten loads of inspiration. I've scanned a sheet of old paper to use as background and have been experimenting with different ways to comp the 3d toonshaded elements onto it. Right now I'm trying to get a inked & water colour look so I'm keeping the lines quite sharp while giving the colouring some bleed. Made in max, and comped in afx.

The ninja:

A test of a toony explosion made with sprites, heavily inspired by zelda. :)

Clip #1: Very blurred colours, but sharp lines. (http://www.kloom.com/misc/toonysmoke/blurrycol.avi)

Clip #2: Trying to get the papertexture to show more, got a bit dark though. (http://www.kloom.com/misc/toonysmoke/overlay.avi)

I haven't looked at the second clip, but I love it! How'd you get the colors to bleed like that, etc?

Tooncinatore: I've rendered the outlines and the colours in seperate layers and blurred the colour layer in photoshop. For animations I do the same in After Effects.

House: Nice you liked it. The animation started out as an attempt to copy the explosions from zelda in max, so it's very similar.

I've done another composition of the ninja, now I've used the paperlayer over the 3d-elements and not just below it. To get the highlights from the paper, not just the shadows.

Also I thought it was fun to see the difference from model to render. The rendered version is of course also subdivided.

And here is an updated comp, with a rotation clip of the ninjamodel.

Any yet another update. Now I've started comping explosions in with the ninja, took the opportunity to make it the standard ninja appearance practise :).
It's getting tricky with shadows from the particale system and all. So I will have to keep trying. Here's the last comp I made. You'll notice that the smoke doesn't fade out nicely, but there was a strange artifact in the rendering there so I chose the lesser evil and just chopped out a couple of frames there as a temporary fix.

Ninjabaff1.mov, sorensen video 3 codec, 3.9mb (http://www.kloom.com/misc/ninja/ninjabaff1.mov)
