View Full Version : Animation: Montage Demo Reel
amo_77 08-07-2003, 09:45 PM Hello all.
I've read much, and posted very little. But it's time for me to jump in the game.
I'm a character animator looking for critique on my montage animation reel. I am not a modeler, lighting artist or texture artist. I'm strictly trying to showcase character animation skills. I'll appreciate any critiques, but I'm really hoping for some movement/animation crits. Does this reel do the job?
My reel can be found in Quicktime format at

3D work done in Alias Maya. Adobe Photoshop and Premiere used for texturing, editing. Sorry for the smaller size... bandwidth, space... yada yada.
Thanks!

There are some nice set pieces in there. I like the interaction between the different scenes.
Some actions of the white dude in the toilet look a bit unnatural though. Its hard to explain but he sometimes defies gravity.

You have a good sense of humor and nice timing skils. Good luck with everything!

supervlieg , that bathroom piece proved really tough. It was a lot of awkward positioning and movement. Perhaps I need to go back in and rework some of the weighting. Thanks for the crit... I really appreciate it.

Lovely moments.
I liked especially;
The bomb trying to blow itself out. Simple and funny
The moment when the batter positions his bat to where the 2 balls previously flew. Priceless.
Yea, I know animation skills, smoothness, etc, are important, but you're showing here something more valuable than that...storytelling. Make me laugh, and I'll forgive any kind of animation. I just want to encourage you on that front.

BigSky, thanks very much for the comments. I'm glad I could entertain. I'm really trying to push a storytelling angle with my reel, so I'm including a mix of action and acting relating to story. It's proven tough with a montage format. I find it very interesting that you liked the bomb portion. I've been getting some negative feedback on that, and I thought it's simplicity was appealing. I'm still on the fence about it as I re-edit the reel. Hope to have a new edit available soon.
Thanks again for taking a look.
