View Full Version : Need help : Bamboo
KirkBjerk 08-07-2003, 06:37 PM Well I made a concept drawing the other day and thought I would attempt to model it. I'm very new to max and have yet to refine my focus on what tools are the best for what objects  K, so the scene is of 3 various length bamboo stalks with a single stalk coming off of each one like a new bud, but growing leaves. My problem is I can't quite figure out how to modle the stalks, my main problem being with the intermediate 'ridges' along the stalk. These obviously extend greater then the overall radius, so how should I go about doing this?: Baisic tool to start with, Modeling the 'ridges' and the actuall leaves that come from the second stalks?
any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hey, buddy, post a pic of what you're talking about. It can be a sketch, a photo...something to give us an idea of what it looks like.

Well I don't have access to a camera or scanner at the moment so..... Went and spent some time on google, The one potted is very close to what I'm going to make, the other one is to give the detail of the ridges and what not...... hope this helps :hmm:

If you haven't already, go through the tutorials that ship with Max. They'll help explain the pros and cons of various modeling methods, and you'll be able to progress much quicker once you've taken the time to learn the fundamentals.

I have been through the tutorials max has aswell as the VTM's offered by 3dbuzz, just looking for some advice

Try mesh/poly modeling based on a cylinder primitive. Add cross-sections around the ridged areas where you need them, then scale up the polys for the ridges. And for your leaves branching off, just keep extruding your edges and sculpting them to your desired shape. Depending on how close you'll get, you may not even need to add thickness to the leaves, but just use a double-sided material to them. You may want to try this low-poly and then apply meshsmooth. This will help when attaching the leaves to the main stalk.

Ya just to add in... if you select the segment, you can chamfer it to get more segments... which is probably the best way to get the bamboo look

For being my first thought provoked model (not tutorial) I'm happy with it. It's not much but with my experience I thought the teapot looked damn cool :P So again any advice would be helpful, otherwise I'm going to take this over to the WIP section and go from there :)
Thx

Hey, that actually looks like bamboo! :D
I'd add a bit of noise to the shafts to give it a more irregular look. Maybe just a noise modifier.
Eh, give it a try.

Thx for the help guys....
Death how the hell did you do that texture thats awesome! But as far as the hole..... These will be live bamboo so the hole would kinda hinder them being green :P I would really like to know your ideas on a texture however, cept maybe more living???
Nycean, Yeah I ended up using poly/mesh, bevel and inset mainly but I'll give your idea a try and see what I come up with :)

K I'm off to doing the leaves now :) think I'm going to try a tube primitive cut down and extrude along spline with some taper action :) Any other advice is welcome!
Oh and if this is on the border of a useless post just lemme know mods, I don't want to anger those who are worried for forum policy
oh and death I meen where did you get the texture not how you made it, sry for confusion

Any ideas about the leave structure, with all the nesting each leaf does I'm not quite sure how to go about it...

They always looks like this (http://www.geocities.com/zigaretos/leaves.txt) (structure) :)
Errh...how about try to build those leaves by using this tools (http://www.onyxtree.com/stormx.html) :surprised
or give some more times to search something free to build those leaves

looks like a great tool, unfortunately I'm not a Mac user, So I'm off to look for other ones :), went through some tut sections and there was one on an aloe vera plant leaf so maybe I could fool around with that for a little while.......

Wow those are great!, I'll take them and study. I still need to know how to make them on my own hehe:p so I'll post a full secne here shortly :)
DeathBrain

Ah there you are....how to make them ? it was really easy
I used point surf nurbs then converted to a poly, fastest way to create a leaf (i guess) :)
Ok...waiting your final result
