yep, to do an efficient job, you need 'em both, no real cutting etc, in AE.
AVID will release a Avid Free DV soon, aparently it will be a Avid Xpress DV with some limitations.
Perfect for students, DV camera owners and video enthusiasts - virtually anyone exploring video editing - Avid Free DV software is an easy, free way to join the Avid family and test-drive the industry-standard editing interface used by more professionals than any other video editing solution.

It is scheduled to include basic video and audio editing capabilities, up to two streams of real-time effects and support for both Windows XP and Macintosh OS X platforms.
Once you’ve had a chance to familiarize yourself with the Avid editing interface via Avid Free DV software, we invite you to step up to the robust production and networking features found in our professional line of products such as Avid Xpress DV software, Avid Xpress Pro software, and the revolutionary new Avid Media Composer Adrenaline system.
Avid Free DV software is currently scheduled to be downloadable via www.avid.com in Q3 2003. If you’d like to receive updated information on Avid Free DV as it becomes available, please fill out the form below and we’ll send you email updates.
