View Full Version : EIAS versus Industry/C4D

Hi there

I am a long time user for EIAS (currently 6.5x), and appreciate all they have done, and the responsiveness to past issues. That said, it seems/feels the software (Even v8.0??) has fallen quite behind the curve of the industry? (of course using a dollar per dollar comparison)

I am considering switching to C4D for my main tool.

Feedback on EIAS versus the industry, and versus C4D specifically would be/is appreciated.

take care

I guess you havent download the demo ..:( if u r on a MacTel than there is no other way to go, if you are on PPC than EIAS is the key.

I have to say it depends what you are trying to do. I use both and each has it's pros/cons. I know EI way better than C4D, and my usage has been limited when compared to my EI usage. I can say I prefer EIs upgrade fees over C4D. I opted not to purchase MoGraph 2 yrs ago and my upgrade fee is close to $1k less than the $3k purchase price from 2 years ago.

I don't do enough 3d these days to warrant the upgrade, so I'll stay where I am with a working EI v6/7 on an old (hard to believe) aging quad PPC G5. I'm at that point in computers/software compatibility that I have to stick with an older machine and not fork over $13k for a robust loaded Octo with lots of ram just to keep up with the software upgrades. I do own a MacBookPro and a newer iMac, but I don't use them as 'production' machines...even though they DO render faster than the G5 with more ram.

Does that put me behind the curve? Maybe with a few things, but on the whole, I still think an older 'working' system/software combination is worth it's weight in gold in a production environment....at least for me anyway.

I'm comfortable in EI and it does what I need it to do, plus it renders FAST!

Same old story I have heard for near 20 years... there is only 1 answer. What ever is important to you? EIAS does a lot good, even great, but there are things that just are possible in EIAS. If you need only it's features, then use it. If you need features that are only offered in another package... then that is your answer.

You will find EIAS's renderer industry tops in speed & quality... other packages have fewer workarounds and more features... and with more features, comes complexity.

A lot of people love C$D... same with other packages.

My opinion... there is no 1 perfect app, and a combination of applications is necessary.

my 2¢

Hi Everyone,

Gotta jump in as moderator again. On CGTalk, application vs application or "which application should I buy" threads are not permitted. Mainly its to prevent flame war threads from starting.

I'm more than happy to discuss EI in relationship to the industry, its toolset, how those tools can or can not meet your needs, what you'd like to see, and try to discover a course of action for you.

CJ is right. Most artists tend to use a combination of applications to get something done.

Daniel why don't you identify exactly what you're needing a 3D application to do for you.

Vizfizz,

sorry for unintentionally crossing the line of CG talks goals.

I'd love EIAS to continue being my (and many others) main program as I have so many years invested in it, but as I said it seems to have fallen quite a bit behind the "industry" curve as far as what it can do.

I'd love advice, input on the best application(s) out there for Product Visualizations, Logo treatments, Architectural Video Mapping, and Motion Graphics. I am solely MAC based, and do a lot of shooting on a SONY XDCAM also. I do not do character animation type things. Thanks VERY MUCH!

Ok.. well for motion graphics (and the other things you described), EI is a pretty decent package. Lets go further and see if you can identify what it is you specifically need EI to do...and then we'll see if there is a solution.
