if it has a proper serial number it should be upgradeable, all you do is enter it on the maxonshop site :)

For those in the Benelux: C'T magazine (the Dutch version) will have the same free version. The magazine will be available from the second half of august.
Netwerk magazine will also have it on their CD, but a date has not been set yet.
And yes, Cinema4D CE 6 will be upgradable. The pricing isn't known yet.
Kind regards,

Just my luck, looks as though I could have saved myself a ton of money by waiting a few months, figures. Oh well, I love Maxon so they are forgiven. :) -- 3d_e

I'm not exactly sure what the deal is, but I think the CD version is somewhat cut down from the retail XL6, and the upgrade price will be higher. But I might be wrong....

Hi Adam, you're not wrong. C4D CE 6 has the same functionnality as C4D XL 6, but with one difference: the render resolution is reduced to 600x400 (or something like that - I'd have to check to have the exact numbers). You can however upgrade to C4D CE 6 Plus, which has no resolution limits and which is identical to C4D XL 6.
Important: from a commercial viewpoint, C4D CE 6 plus isn't the same as C4D XL 6: upgrading to version 8 from the former will cost more than upgrading from the latter.
And for those interested: in Germany the first magazine with the free version has already hit the market. I'm not sure which one it is, though. I would have to check...
cheers,
BaRa

Here in Germany Cinema 4D CE comes with the latest
"PC-Magazin"-issue. The resolution is cut down to
600x400. You can upgrade to Cinema 4D CE plus for
99 Euro to render higher resolutions.
I have ordered my copy on Sunday and hopefully
it arives soon. Until now I could play only with
demo versions at home. Thanks Maxon for this great
special.

Eh ? Eh ? did i read that right. XL 6 on coverdisk.
Slightly worried about that for a moment till i read that it was limited in resolution.
Why? Well, last year i spent £200 on the upgrade to XL 6 from the Cinema 4D 5 se coverdisk full version.
I always wondered when they would give away a free version of XL 6 and it looks as if Maxon is getting a strong hold in the public interest, and being respected within the CG Graphics Industry/ Community. :)
Just a few months ago i upgraded to C4D R8.1 XL Bundle from XL6 for £410 and am impressed how powerful the texture engine is.
My Athlon 750 Pc is 3 years old and i need a new one to take advantage of the power of c4d R8.1.
XL 6 was a huge step with hypernurbs and interface change,so maybe those who are on the fence about getting c4d will get the taste for it and upgrade further.
Anyone know if maxon are giving away any freebees ? Oh yeah 8.2 :)

Vs 6 was the last version with the very fast rendering, similar to Vs 5. After 6 they improved the aliasing and the render really slowed down. There was a lot of kerfuffle at the time and denials etc etc. 6 is a handy version especially if you're not an animator. Cant remember if sla was supplied with the app or an extra.

It isn't quite the full version, seeing as Maxon are offering upgrades to the full xl6, but it is very close.

7 and 8 are generally no slower than 5 and 6 in fact in most cases they are significantly faster.
However... there is a known issue in 7 which causes scenes with lots of displacements to slow down. This displacement issue was found to be the cause of slower renders in 95% of all the speed problems reported. In my case anyway. t was possibly addressed in 7.3, but I cant be certain.

There were aliasing options that were in 6, but not 7. The aliasing was improved in 7. My impression was that the speed of render in Vs 5 was owing to the poor quality aliasing especially on bump maps. I used to be able to render out huge files in Vs 5, (90mb in under an hour), not so in current versions, all things being equal, like processor etc.

Anyone know if the ComputerArtsCD will include a Mac version? I got a free copy of version5 SE free on a PC-CD magazine but that was PC only. Wasn't that different from Cinema 4DGo either. :thumbsdow
Anyone here recommend getting this new one? Will the modelling really be any better?
Hi,
at least MacUp in germany will have a Mac version included.
Cheers

About a year ago, a C4D version was available for free with a Digit magazine. The catch was that we had to register it at the Maxon Web site but Maxon would only accept European users. Before I buy the magazine, I would like to know if it is still the case. Digit magazine is from the same publisher as Computer Arts after all.

Go was based on version 5, if I recall correctly. Version 6 is really different, but if you want the real deal, version 8 is the only right way to go :)
And yes, modeling is different thanks to HyperNurbs which wasn't available - if I recall correctly - in version 5 (C4D Go).

If the german version has gone out, I have one last question and this tends to affect MacUsers more than PC users..
What version of MacOS or MacOSX was version 6 XL written for?

OSX didn't exist when Vs6 came out. It'd been a variety of OS9,
or even OS8.5
There is an OSX version of 6.3 so even if the ComputerArts version isn't OSX you should be able to use the updter to make it run on OSX (I hope!) I'm downloading the updater from Maxon right now, just in case! - Baz
