View Full Version : Cliffs, rocks - how to uv mapping

Hi,
I try to make some cliffs, rocks and other environment stuff. It is not a problem to me how to make a rock or cliff model. Problem is in UV mapping. What is the best solution in UV mapping for clifs or rocks? I am not a artist, but I know to find a good textutre for a mesh. I also know that different meshes need different UV mapping. But still, is any of UV mapping more preffered than other? I often look AAA games and environment made by professionals and their rocks, cliffs, stones meshes. Could someone point me to a good specific tutorial or give me just a idea, how to make a "pro" mesh.

Take what i say as a very loose guide :eek: Im not a texture artist, and a bad one when i try :argh:
A couple of ways you could do it would be:
1. Face mapping using a tileing texture
2. Planar mapper the entire wall and using a REALLY large texture

For quick and easy result, face map with a tiling texture. For the rocks themselve, spherical unwrap them and use a tiling texture :)

Its not the most pro way of unwrapping something for texturing, but it will get the job done. :)

I dont think how you unwrap it matter does it? (Somone correct me if im wrong plz) The only difference different methods give you is the size, shape and layout of the uv's. They will still work with a texture, but will just be laid out different when using different methods.

All you gotta do is understand how the uv's are laid out, and apply your texturing accordingly.

Yeah you need to play around with uv's a bit to understand it... changing the axis between y, z, x may be all you need and then scaling it appropriately (if you are tiling the texture)... mapping organic objects is pretty simple since normally you are just applying 1 diffuse map to the entire thing and normally it wouldn't have to go in a specific direction.
