12Point0 is pretty decent--especially for free. It's a toon/outline post effect, and is certainly an improvement over the built-in cel shader.

hmm that fluid dynamics and caustics look fantastic, is that in cinema? wow and cool if it is.

just made some wacky experiments with it
Its a C4D-model, 12point0 shader used:
sorry - no attached pic?

The second link has an okay line render too but its got a really sweet shader anyone doing cel shading should check out. Boith are great to have, between them both oyu get a nice extension to the built in celrender.

i asked Jörn Loviscach for a Mac-version of 12point0 and he told me that one of his students might recompile the plug for Mac. you could mail him and tell him that you would also appreciate that: j.loviscach@computer.org

like the looks of the shader thing on that wfrender thingy..looks useful.
12point0 sounds cool...but someone before mentioned it was buggy...so never tried it.
i pray for the day cinema gets a full implementation either plugin or native of a toon style render/npr toolset...with excellent line controls etc...can't see it any time soon...maybe someone can tell me otherwise...

Only ones that could tell you would be maxon, even if something was a glimmer in maxon's eyes anyone who knew about it would be under NDA.
There are four 3rd party solutions to my knowledge one of which will never be available done by a german student I met a sig. Shame it sounded pretty capable from her description.

pity i was curious thats all.
ok i can think of these solutions.
toonshade, eva, cartoonreyes, finaltoon, braziltoon, illustrate!
i know illustrate won't be on c4d...
so which is more likely then?
:p

Toonshade=not possible really since it uses Maya PaintFX for its lines. Actually anyone with a little mel scripting knowledge and Maya 5 would be wasting their money on toonshade now, Jason is doing an npr film and what he did in maya is use the new built in line renderer, then used mel to bring the lines into paint effects, doing exactly what toonshade does, quite ingenious on both parts though, since PaintFX is so powerful it allows for a lot of control.
Cartoonreyes=never, its maxon only and will stay so, the reyes plugins will always be max only. Cartoon reyes isn't their impressive one either, they have a seperate NPR plugin that is damn impressive that I"d like to see but again won't ever happen.
Braziltoon=obviously never, its brazil, who still remains to be seen if it ever supports a final maya version, c4d will never happen.
Illustrate=As you already mentioned, will never happen, again a max thing.
evacorrect me if I"m wrong, its been a long time since I saw the site, but itsn't that designed for renderman compliant renderers, I seriously can't remember, Funny how I could sit here and tell you half the images on that site by memory, but forget all the details about the renderer itself.
which leaves us with
FinaltoonCebas simply won't do it, they are very friendly when it comes to somethings and very protective of others. I think its would be a good chance, and could happen in the distant future, but not anytime soon I dont expect.
There are also a whackload of LW ones like BESM which are all pretty decent, but they are mainly asian small persoan third party developments and would likley never port over. FUnny, NPR renderers for the anime market are so much easier then the north american market. Almost any line renderer I've seen is capabole of anime style renderings, nice even lines highly detailed and quantize shaders match the anime shading pretty spot on.

mine crashes as well, but not on startup, only if I try and use the plugin, and it's not recoverable, instantly closes :annoyed:

sudden crashers, now we are three :)
on my laptop everything's fine with the r8.1 demo. even removing all plugs doesn't help on the desktop machine. both machines are running win xp home. no luck with high priority either :(
this is sad, i really liked to try that thingy

kai i'm totally with you on the lightwave stuff i've seen some really simple but flexible plugin stuff for lightwave from asian developers and they just kick ass...i just can't understand why non of our own developers out there have picked up the ball and ran with it a little more...would like to see a fresh approach and considered approach from our own native and skilled developers...

some links for people.
http://www.algorithmic.com/eva_e.html
http://www.celshaded.com/home/technology/besm/body_besm.html
couple of those lightwave plugs i mentioned..
http://www.3d-drawing.com/plugins/edgetman/index.html
http://www.3d-drawing.com/plugins/3ddstcel/index.html
some of that stuff you can probably do now...its just functionality in one plugin would be nice rather than lots of different methods..clashing with each other..also flexible control.
celshader info

http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/URZ/hardware/parallel/local/softimage/Soft3D_html/tutorial/toonshad/default.htm
i would just like the functionality and flexibility of packages like illustrate really..rather than this piecemeal mismatch of solutions we currently have!

To me, from my little experience with the current toon shader, we just need the capacity to render hidden or non-edge lines to get the basics of a decent line renderer. The nif we can vary the line with noise and other functions, we are on our way to a NPR renderer. The shading part of toon rendering could be takled with normal materials, but it would be nice to have specific shaders for cartoon rendering. Again this could be the beginning of a NPR renderer. But alas I think out alound, and have no programming skills to put it into action.

That's weird. I wonder if there's something wrong with the version he has on his site. Since he's got it available without strings attached would it be okay for me to put it on my site for a little while?
it crashes on my system, too. it fails in the intialisation prozess.
8.1studio, winxp-home, 512mb ram
i also tried to remove any other pluin but it won´t work eighter.
is it possible that this issue comes up after installing the bodypaint2-demo? i did install bp2demn before 12point.
slouchcorp
08-08-2003, 05:46 PM
no its not that i havent got the bp2 demo here mines the same as squids crashes as soon as i select the plug, im wondering if its a xp thingbut others on xp are using it. iv got it working fine at work on win2k. strange.

Just thinking, maybe it requires something in the 8.2 sdk which none of you guys have. it works perfect on my system.
is the 8.2sdk out already?
slouchcorp
08-08-2003, 09:00 PM
cant be that kai because iv got it working fine at work with 8.1 and various plugs cluttering up my plugins menu, not a single problem. at homw howvery iv removed all plugs and like squiddy still crashes....

Well the developer might have one through maxon. I don't htink its publicly available yet, I thought maybe it was only beta testers who'd managed to get it working but I see now thats not the case.

no netrenderer active here

i'm sure that's no cinema/maxon prob. it works on peoples machines from demo to plugin-monster-install :)
those damn windows updates:thumbsdow
have you read the accompanying eula? that´s the reason why i never installed it.

well i have, the one that comes with windows itself either.
anyway, i'll have to do what i call the windows-menstruation :)
reinstall my system. every month since win95 *g*
but honestly, tis getting better since xp. i can do a little research on this problem while reinstalling all the apps.

---when turning off Transparency in the render settings it works with my c4d.
Line detection is nice.
Need to do 2 renders when wanting transparency and add line over Color in Post.

theres only one thatI know for sure supports reflection and refraction (I think brazil toon might not sure) and thats Final toon. Its a very hard thing to do, especially reflection so most just don't support it.
