Hey all!

Though I might start a wip thread here.
I've wanted to do it for a while, but I never got the time to actually sit down and get started. So finally, here we go! :)

I'm Andrea, I'm 23 and work fulltime as a concept artist for feature films in Sweden.
I travel by train every day to get to my job, wich means about 3 hours of travelling per day.
During this day, paint. I do personal work and concepts, lots of characters, and some studies. Everything to take advantage of the time and learn as much as possible.

I'll post wips and sketches in here, and at least 80% of everything I post has probably been created while I was on the train :)

Hope you like, and feel free to give feedback! Everything is appreciated since I want to learn as much as possible every day.

Cheers!
//Andrea

I'll start out with e pic of my "superflashy" portable studio ;)

wo0lF: Thank you very much! :)

lightcache: Thank you! We'll see if I get the inspiration to make something ut of it, I'll bare it in mind!

do-re-my: Thank you! Yeah it's great, but it's also extremely challenging. Everyday involves problemsolving :) Practice, practice!

nho03: Thanks! Awesome, that's a really effective way to get new ideas and develop old ones. I do that too, between the train rides while taking the bus or the tram.

Here's a wip I'm working on. Just a simple pixie I practice skintones and lighting on.
All kind of critique is welcome!

I think she is too bright. But better then darken her skin is to add more light to grass behind her (spotlight).
Concept is nice.

Hi Andrea,

I looked through your portfolio and web site, very impressive stuff! I especially love the cats, as you no doubt can tell I am a cat lover and like anthropomorphizing them. You've got a sweet deal doing concept art for a real film studio. Congrats to that, wish I was at that point.

Your drawing is pretty good. I agree with the above posts about her being too pale, but I have to say that the thing that stands out most to me that could afford some improvement is the anatomy-- the line going from the bottom of the breasts to the legs tends to jut out a bit far, which makes her look a bit stocky. Taking a bit of mass off the back might help as well.

I would start adding redder/oranger hues to make the flesh more alive (the pale gothic style also works if that is your aim, but the dark background clashes a lot with contrast so I would try to compensate). I also think it might help to add some red to the nipples, they seem a little unnatural being pale.

It's always inspirational to see someone so young in concept art for film! If you have the time, please help me with my current work in progress: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=6112973#post6112973

wo0lF: Thanks for the feedback!

xCheshire: Thank you very much, I'll see what I can do!

SpiritHunter: Hey Davis, thank you very much! Yeah it's quite ok, my contract ends in dec though, so it's time to look for something else to work on :)

Thank you very much for the feedback on the pixie. I definitely need to make more figure drawings. I chose to put this painting aside for a while now too, since it didn't feel like me and the personal style I'm aiming for.

I saw your progress thread as well, and sorry for answering so late! These past months has been terribly busy, but I hope it will change next month for a while :)

Some new stuff then..
Will get back with mooore soon.

Hi Andrea,

Yea I know about things getting busy, I've just recently finished my demo reel after a month or more of no posting on CGsociety.

The painting I put up has been finished since-- I have not posted the final yet, but it's MUCH better since Steven Stahlberg himself has critiqued it with a paintover. Here's a link to his eye-opening thread, "PAINTOVER PLEASE": http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=6210314#post6210314

If you're ever stuck, post your image there.

I like the painting of the dog and mutant squirrel best. Nice composition, colors and contrast of character. The stallions are also good, nice motion and anatomy. You might want to render some areas out in more detail and play with the background and foreground values to bring contrast to the horse's sillhouette. Example:

Can't wait to see more!

Very nice drawings :) I'm sorry I can't help you improve as you are at a far more advanced level than me T.T

But your situation reminds me mine one year ago, when I was working in Paris (as a web developper), in my 1 hour break, I always went to a park where I was drawing, or programming some personnal projects...

I know how exausting it is, so good luck :)

Hey!

Nice paintings!

If you are stuck on rendering skin study the concept of sub surface scattering (SSS). It basically involves adding more saturation to the transition between light and shadow on the skin (making it look more translucent). I see that you have a little bit of that going on in the figure study, but the pixy painting could benefit from an effect like that also.

Another ting you might consider (though its a matter of preference), is to add some more saturated color to your subdued color palettes in general. you can use them to bring attention to certain details in your compositions.

What films have you been working on in Sweden by the way? Anything I might have seen? (Im from Norway)

Best of luck!

vmarines: Thank you! :)

SpiritHunter: Wow thanks for the paintover on the horses! Unfortunately, I accidently replaced my file with a compressed one, so basically, I'll have to repaint it, or make a new horse piece when time allows. Anyway thank you so much for your time!
I took a look at your piece as well, and your stuff is superpromising! I'll keep an eye on you :)

kamui-kun: Hey thank you very much! Hey, it's not impossible with lot sof practice. Just stick to it :)
Nice to hear from others who try to use their time wisely! Working in a park seems awful cozy I must say!

Obstfelder: Thanks for the useful tips! I'll definitely pay mor attention to the things you pointed out about SSS and saturating parts of my pics :)
Oh, it's nothing superflashy, just some children's movie for really small children :) Don't work there anymore, I'm about to start freelancing pretty soon.
