View Full Version : modo preview render question
simmsimaging 09-05-2009, 07:21 AM I'm just starting to look at switching our studio over to modo (maybe). I'm curious about the render engine and the preview render, and had a couple of questions about it.
- are there any render features that don't show in the preview engine? i.e displacement, or caustics? I'm particularly interested in those two as they are generally hard to setup without some kind of preview, but also curious if it will show mo-blur and depth of field.
Thanks in advance

Both are shown in preview.

Both of what ?!
As far as i know what is supported by the preview is displacement and depth of field.
I'm not sure if motionblur is supported but i think it is.
Caustics are not supported (yet) by the previewrenderer, you have to launch a real rendering to see them but you can easily preview caustics by using low settings to get a quick preview of what they will look like.
Displacement has two modes, accurate and draft where accurate takes longer to calculate but it will show you a better representation of what your displacement will look like. The draft mode is much faster but will ofcourse be less accurately represented in the preview window.
Good to hear you're considering Modo for your work Brett :) it's a nice choice.

Direct caustics are not shown in preview yet (each time you move the photons would have to be recalculated via the current method, which would end the realtime preview name), though indirect are due to being a by product of the standard radiosity method.

Thanks guys.
So are the caustics difficult to achieve in modo? It's something that is always hard to set up in biased render engines (in my experience). Too many arcane parameters that vary wildly from scene to scene etc. I've certainly seen some nice examples done in modo, but it's always hard to know how much pain went into making them :)
Thanks again - and good to see you around Magnus :)

Not really a render question, but can you use image-mapped area lights in modo? I use them all the time now, and I could switch to an image mapped plane, but Vray lights are well optimized for better lighting quality than using planes. How does modo handle that?
Thanks
