View Full Version : -Global Illuminaton Settings Question-

I am curious about the normal settings for global illum in a scene. It seems that I have read that to get really good quality you would need to set the photon emission to 1,000,000 photons. This seems like a lot of photons since the default setting is around 10,000.
Also I have read that you would need to up the 'Global Illum Accuracy' setting to achieve a more realistic rendering.
Then you have the 'Global Illum Radius'. I have not read a lot of information on this setting so I have just been playing around with it.
The problem I am having is that I can't seem to get a soft realistic render with what seems to be extreme settings.
This first image:
Photons: 1,000,000
Accuracy: 10,000
Radius: 1.5

Photons: 1,000,000
Accuracy: 10,000
Radius: 1.25

Photons: 1,500,000
Accuracy: 10,000
Radius: 1.15

It seems that when the radius goes up, the shadows underneath the spheres disappear but the splotchy lighting decreases.
When the radius goes down to around 1, the shadows look a lot better but the walls get splotchy.
This is why I increased the photon number up to 1,500,000 but I am getting longer and longer renders for a relatively simple scene. I am using a PowerMac (Dual 1 Gig processors) with OS X 10.2.6 and Maya 5. The renders are getting close 5 minutes.

I would hate to see how long it would take to actually get a realistic render of a complex scene if a few NURBS planes and spheres breaks the bank.

Could someone fill me in on what my problem is. Maybe I am doing something wrong here. Oh yeah, and I have the 'Physical' button checked in the point light attributes settings also. This seemed to make the lighting darker but more accurate. Thanks for any help.
