View Full Version : Lattice deformers buggy?

Hi,

it seems lattice deformers don't work too well in connection with particles.
I have one particles system in my scene and the particles' movement is controlled by a lattice deformer- this works pretty well.

I need a second particle system, in the scene and I wanted to do some lattice deformation on it's particles, either.

So I selected the particles, and did Create Deformers -> Lattice. Now particle system no. 1 is still working fine whereas particle system no. 2 was completely destroyed.

Does anyone know how to deal with lattices deforming particles in Maya?

if you are using your first particle to emit your second thats where you may be running into difficulty. When you use a lattice on particles it creates a second particle that is used as the deformed particle and ...although its been awhile...the first particles PP atts become invalid....i think....like i said been awhile. if you want to have your second system emit from the original particle try your emission off the deformed particles.

good luck

@ Mandark
Can you explain that again?
I have never seen a deformer create a new particle shape. Is this something that happens under the hood? Or have you actually seen this in the outliner? Neither have I experienced PP attributes becoming invalid.

@Phlok

I recreated what you just explained in a few ways, all have worked fine. Try a fresh scene, and rebuild a basic setup like the one you are having problems with, and let us know if the problem still occurs.

like i said it had been awhile, i just did a quick scene and its the shape node that gets the tag deformed on it. Im not sure if this has been changed since i did it last but i remember running into a similiar problem and it was because the original particle object had been changed because of the deformer and i had to use that node instead. Well thankfully you took more time to help this guy out than i did lol. hope i didnt mess you up!

LOL...OK, I see what you mean.
Just to clarify things. That shape node is a representation of the original particle shape and the deformation it went through with the lattice. The original particle shape still contains all the custom attributes and expressions. Those attributes dont appear in the deformed shape's PP attributes, because it is just a representation. And of course you can't apply new attributes to the deformed shape because of that same reason. With all this being said, its not an issue. You still select the particle that appears in your outliner or viewport. The only way you can select the deformed shape is if you go digging for it. So if you have expressions or attributes that you would like to control, just do so by selecting the particle as you would before applying deformation. All modifications to the particle get piped to the deformed representation.
