View Full Version : WIP Character Alien....Spot!
need4speed 08-07-2003, 01:15 AM Okay, so until the texturing is on him, you won't know why he's called Spot, but the name stuck a couple of years ago when I designed him.
This is an alien creature, a genetically created one by an alien race. I won't go into further detail about his family history for now though.....
Anyway, this is my first creature design, done in LightWave and I'm wondering about getting feedback on the look of the alien and the modeling. The texturing is just something tossed on there to make him not be totally plastic looking for the present and the lighting is much simpler to see him in this way than what I have planned for him in the future during animation.
All constructive criticism welcomed. I've been using LightWave for a couple of years now, but character building is still a bit new to me!

Hey Andrew,
I think it looks pretty good! Interesting design, has a strong reptile look. he's very menacing, i'd hate to run into him. lol
not much to say since it's an alien and therefore i can't tell you how it should look. but i like what you've done so far. the only thing that bugs me are his eyes. he looks everybit the predator, and yet his eyes aren't suited for hunting. they are recessed into his head a bit and those 'brows' above the eyes would only add to his lack of FOV. Also, he has no nostrils, so i can't assume he has a keen sense of smell and doesn't need the eyes much (like a shark or somthing which also has eyes on the side of the head).
One more thing, the tail is rather boring. it's so smooth and plain. maybe add some detail on the tail?
keep up the work, i'd love to see it animated

Thanks for the feedback!
As this was my first more "organic" creation, I have been looking at just in general how the muscles and underlying structure are affecting his skin and where and how the bulges appear. I've tried to look at a muscle system on a person is built and tried to use that as a model for the differences on him, so that he could work. Just wondering if anybody saw anything really odd! hehe
The eyes actually, while appearing a bit recessed between those armored structures, actually stick out a bit. I checked to make sure that was the case when I built him and the head actually gets narrower toward the front of the face just to help make sure his FOV is in a large arc about him. He has fairly clear vision in a large arc about his head, except looking up as you note. If I can remember I'll get a head on shot of him. He can actually see quite well toward the front, all the way up to his mouth.
He does actually have a sensory system for smelling, the large places pushed into the side of the face just to either side of the mouth will become basically "surface" sensors that he can move air across. A lot of that will be done with textures, so they don't show up yet....my bad for not letting everyone know. The long pieces on his neck will be gills, so he can also swim and extract air from those when open and he'll probably also have some sort of sensors there for smelling underwater.
Yes, the tail does need a little something....I have been looking to see what I might do and haven't found anything I really like yet. But for some reason I just got a good idea! Now I have to wait until I get home to try it...doh!!!!
Stay tuned! I have those details to tweak, then it will be time to texture, rig and animate! I've already got his eye endomorphs setup for the pupils to be able to dilate and he's got a pretty wicked set of teeth inside that mouth to help get a grip on his food...
Thanks again! More coming soon!!!!
Anybody else?
