E.D.A.H is a private practice group Jack Zhang (http://jackzhang.cgsociety.org/gallery/) created on facebook. but it's now open to anyone who want to participate. if you want more detail you could read the info on Zhang post here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=6082959#post6082959)

same rules apply for the 2D work

1. each update needs to show what you have at the beginning of the hour, follow by what you have at the end of the hour.
2. don't cheat.

my monthly focus for september: character design and photosop painting
so here a piece I've been working on but since I didn't see the time pass, this is the result of 17 hour of work i'm still new to photoshop painting so I'm a bit slow
*warning* it's a really big image (http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6848/mathiew.png)

Click the button that looks like a yellow/gray square with mountains and a square sun, it should ask you for the link, otherwise you could just use the tags

love the spawn study.

piece of advice to zacD: focus on smaller image. for instance, the latest update, you could ignore the background and the office guy, spend more time focus on the fat dude, even just his head. Repeatedly working on the same subject allows you to grow faster. That's one of the reason i created E.D.A.H so i can show the public of what i'm talking about.

lol. i'm flattered. thanks.

If I may. it seems to me that you execution needs a bit consistency, in terms of style. personally i like the spawn the most. it is the closest toward a real concept. I suggest you go with that direction. Also if you seriously consider becoming a concept art, may I suggest start with silhouette study for a month. you will notice the result, i promise.

Hey everyone! I've been a way for a few days so havn't been able to keep this up! However I shall do it when I can...

I decided rather than start something new, id work a bit more on the pieces I put up before. I was really unhappy with my dragon... it was far too soft and plastic looking! So I've redone it with a hard brush and more saturated (I think that's the term!) colours. I think he's looking a bit more angry now!

Btw Spez I love your silhouette work! They have a lot of movement to them, great poses and great anatomy! I think ur concept work is going well. What is alchemy? Is it a painting program of some sort?

Hey,

Thanks for the encouragement spez! Wow that Alchemy program is difficult first try! I have no idea how you're creating such good work with it ;) I tried drawing something and it came out as a big splodge! Might be good for fine art...
How long have you been drawing/doing cg for?

The reason Alchemy is hard to work with is because Alchemy isn't made/designed to be used to make clean pretty picture, you don't go into alchemy trying to draw something, the randomness is crazy abstract shapes is suppose to help you design thumbnails and get ideas.

wow nice idea jack :D
i have a question tho...can we spend more then an hr a day and just post several pics if we want to (like first hr,second hr,third hr etc....on the same day?)
and what do you mean by setting a focus? we need to study something or should we try making a concept of our own?

will try to join :D

and zacd- i think alchemy is a great software just for the fact that its random as hell cuz sometimes you lack the inspiration and cant just let yourself wonder around for several hrs waiting for something to inspire you and then out of the randomness you get in alchemy you can find some interesting forms that will inspire you :D it was made just for this purpose :D
and some artists prefer using randomness in their works cuz they then can create things that they even didnt think of :D

JackZhang
09-21-2009, 05:04 PM
you can do more than 1 hour, you can post multiple images per day (but I suggest keep that number low, else the thread will be pretty heavy to open at the end).

focus means, don't draw a car today and a rabbit tomorrow and your granny the day after. You can check the E.D.A.H in 3d section and see how I focus.

focus man, focus. silhouette is profound. if you start getting comfortable with brushes, here's your challenge. everyday you pick a word of career/class/job, and you draw as many as possible. For instance: today's word is witchdoctor. I want to see different age, sex, race carry out from just the silhouette. Also, I want to see witchdoctor in the past, present, future(can be sci-fi). it can take you months to cover all the major subject in games/films. Don't move to "finishing" if you seriously want to become concept artist.

finishing contains shape, pose, shade, light, color.

I'm really liking the smoother approach Spez! Your characters are looking totally different (-:

Donglu-littlefish: I love your colour concept! If only I could do better backgrounds :P

Logi: I really like the blocking silhouette that you have done, very nice to see the unique personnality that each of them represents with the minimum information on the canvas.

@Simon: definitely have potential. Let's see how well you can do in my program.

I no longer teach big classes. I now only train the ones that I think truely have potential. When comes to teaching I'm straight forward, tough, and harsh (ask Kevin). Yet I'm sure you've already seen the results from my best ones, so bare with me.

I usually ask 6 things form my students. The ones who were qualified now have jobs, and ones who were not qualified now, also have jobs, at super market or other fileds. Here are my 'requirements'.

1. TRUST ME.
2. FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTION.
3. Drop your ego.
4. Drop your perfectionism.
5. Drop your personal interest.
6. Post your results on a daily basis.

The duration of the program is 2 months. I require minimum 6 hours per day to study and practice. There are total of 6 sections. Each last 10 days (9 days work and 1 day break). We Start on Oct 15th.

cool stuff simon :D i really like the costum of the character of the second link yuve posted (with that cool looking arm wep :D)
and on the one jack posted i like those designs but i think that out of the two lower chars , the left one could use a different head cuz he has all of these gadgets on him including all of these pockets which i think makes it feel like he has lots of gadgets in them and the head is kinda ordinary or not fit into the overall feel of it (only stating my opinion) :D looking forward for more :D

dunglu - like your inviro studies :D keep going ^_^

pheonix - well the only way the make better backgrounds ,or better anything actually,is to draw it and study it :D no shortcuts there :D

haha well that is still reallly good improvement already! We should rename this thread EDI every day improvement, or something more relevant

actually if you focus on every day improvement, you will slow down the improvement speed. the idea behind EDAH is to compare your result from day one with day 30. you need certain amount of practice to really nail down the improvement. Sometimes we get stuck for days or weeks before we have the right click and move forward.

EDI also doesn't work for ppl who has too much ego or pride. focusing on daily improvement will make them believe that they can improve easily, and after 5 days they just think they are superb and stop.

damn holydays ...its such a time consuming thing ~_~

well ive developed a nice concept for close to 2 hrs then i got bored out of it completely and just messed around with duplicating it and rotating it on its side and got this head which i came up with a body to it and started working from there
http://i35.tinypic.com/6zsv80.jpg

http://i37.tinypic.com/2v85t1e.jpg

then it looked kinda bull like nose which wasnt what i was looking for so worked on it abit more
http://i38.tinypic.com/rgwa2t.jpg

itll be a ghosty\shaman like char with all sorts of trinkets on it and idk what more...
3.5~ in total so ill try working on it some more now that i have the time to :D

spez- nice stuff ,i wish i was in an art school or any school that i need to hand in some art stuff :D

Donglu- nice inviros ,i like your pallette on both of these :D i think tho that on the last one that small mountain in the middle of the pic needs to have a less saturated brown /needs to blend with the sky colour more cuz the dark blue side of it is almost blended with the background blue which makes it look like its in the distance but the brown is more saturated then the big mountain on the right of it which is supposed to be closer then the small one .
so it makes it kinda strange looking ,on my opinion, cuz when you look at the brown the small mountain looks closer then the big right one but when you look at the dark side it looks like its further into the distance :D
keep going ^_^

simh- cool stuff :D like those hands ^_^

any C&C will be more then welcomed :D

edit: and yah i know the right hand isnt proportional so ill fix it and some other things ,not all is decided atm so everything might change ^.^

Simon, your program starts tomorrow. this is what I want you to do in the next coming 3 days (it's gonna be boring but try to stay with me): general silhouette.

http://www.freevectors.net/files/large/PeopleSilhouetteVector.jpg

you have 6 hours a day. How to spend it, it's up to you. Here are the "guidelines":
1. the silhouettes should show sex, age, but not race.
2. the silhouettes can be naked, half naked, full dressed.
3. the silhouettes should be front view or three quarter view.
4. the silhouettes should NOT have big accessories like bag, skate board, weapon etc
5. the silhouettes should only have standing poses, no extreme action pose like jumping, running.

do as many as possible, update daily for 3 days. pm me if you have any questions. Have fun.

i give 3 red for LOVE, 2 red for like, 1 red for no comment, 0 red for dislike.comment below.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/Jackzhang/help_simon_01.jpg

in general, i like female better than male (coz i'm a guy! j/k). the curve you are playing with female silhouette is very interesting, male ones are bit less.

based on your today's progress, i adjusted the plan for tomorrow. These are what I want you to focus on:

1. I don't want to see silhouette that tells the character's career. In another word, I don't want to see boxer, warrior, anything like that. I like what you did with the coat, the business suit. there are a lot more you can do, like vest with baggie pants. Anyway, no career silhouette, focus on generic.

2. I want to see some height changing. something like this
http://www.fe-online.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/normal_40300_RFEJ_character_line_up_0314.jpg but only in silhouette.

3. mix your characters. line them up with different sex and height. You definitely can play with the body type of your silhouette, but keep in mind your readability is priority. If over focus on the fatness of the silhouette causing reduction of readability, then don't try too hard.

Also let me know how long did it take you, over all, and proximity each character so I can adjust your program further more. oh and btw, keep your image under 700px width. there's no need to post big.

everything looks good, except 5th one. It's just way too busy. Were you doing a trace/paint over? if so, try not to.

today's summary:
1. not enough age difference (the guys are all under 25, the gals are no more than 35.) Keep in mind.
2. 25 to 35 minutes per one is too slow.

tomorrow's plan: 15 minutes per silhouette, 8 male, 8 female. 8 = (child, young, mid, old)x2. That's 16 x 15 minutes = 4 hours. (which leaves 2 hours for research)

Good progress today. Can you handle tomorrow's challenge?

#3 is a pope and #6 is a teacher. those are the only two that i can read clearly. rest of them are vague and confusing.

class one is all about showing sex and age from silhouette. To show the sex and age, you need to focus on using hair shape, body shape, and dress shape.

class two is just like class one, except this time is about showing career.
something like this
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5079423/2/istockphoto_5079423-three-construction-workers-silhouette.jpg

this should be the right mind set:

1. what career am I drawing?
2. what's the most obvious visual elements representing this carrer?
3. How do I focus on those elements and carry them out through the simplest shape?

JackZhang
10-19-2009, 10:33 PM

much better man, way better!

guys, help me out here:

1. Doctor
2. Cleaning lady
3. Nun
4. Electric welder
5. secretary/office girl
6. waiter
7. miner/constructor
8. this one i'm not sure
9. officer (watch out that arm, it's too thin)
10. balley dancer
11. some random street kid who's name is simon :P (i do have problem figuring out what this career is though)

i love the way you use white on the doc, nun and office girl. tomorrow i'd like to see you continue exploring your path. I'd also want to see a bit white on every character. Let's see how well you can mix white and black to get a greater result.

i also want you to pay attention to proportions tomorrow. watch out for things like thickness of the arm, size of the hands. those are the basics that you should learn from the previous class. make sure you carry your knowledge to the next class all the time.

today's class, big success!

i have problem read #2.

i like the proportion of #1 and #6. I extend class two a bit longer. this weekend i want you keep working on career. you will pay attention to what career has what bodyshape, exactally like what you did with #6. I want you to give it a push. chief can be fatter. football player definitely needs a bigger and strong upper body.

your class 3 will start next monday.

class two focuses on career silhouette. You are doing a good job clearly describing the careers. While enjoy watching your improvement in class two, I also realize some major issues from your works.

take a break tomorrow, I will write you a pm about your next focus. You need to move those roadblocks on your way before you can reach a new level.

i like the way your silhouettes gets loosen. feels like you are really drawing, instead watching the "quality of the result"

i'm not a fan of the last career. i like many fireman, solder, janitor and hunter.watch out the size of your characters. the 3rd janitors is way too tall, a recycle bin is about 3/4 height of a character, now it's only reaching his belly.

you are improving. keep doing what you just did. great work.

your skull shading is fine. the latest update is fne as well. i do recognize that those are from dynamic anatomy. i totally don't mind seeing you using that book for reference for shading study. but keep in mind that dynamic anatomy talks about anatomy, in a somehow exagrate way. eventually when you shade a face, there need to be more than just bones and muscles.

draw woman with ref, then draw woman without ref. then draw woman with ref, then draw woman without ref, then draw woman with ref, then draw woman without ref.

you draw two women with ref, then you go draw a guy without ref. It's like the trainee showed you twice of how to make a chicken burger, then you go make a big mac on your own. Does that make sense to you???

donglu i think this has a really good potential of becoming a really nice pic :D but i think that there are some things that dont quite fit there at least at my point of view :D
*the shoulders muscles on the left side seem to have no ending /definision to her shoulder so it kinda looks like she has none
*her right hand seems to become quite big (at least in compared to her right skinny shoulder)after it passes the sheet.
*and her neck muscles seem abit off and the neck is undefined.

i think that to make it easy for you(instead of rendering her out just to find out you dont want that colour for the sheet or unhappy with the pose) its best to do things simultainously rather then rendering one part and then thinking about the rest of the stuff.there is a great great video here on cgtalk of a really great artist named Marta Dahlig's (http://blackeri.cgsociety.org/) (dont know if yuve watched it yet ) which she shows her creating a piece for expose 7 http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=5228 and she really defines everything simoultainously which i think is quite good cuz then you dont have to fight over the changes you suddently want to make.not saying this is how you should work but the proccess of working on everything simoultainously is quite efficient :D

looking forward to see how yull progress with it :D

Hi, acb12, thanks for the suggestions. There are just still so many place which have been worked out yet, not only the shoulders, but the hands, the feet, the breast area, etc...I am throwing the general information down first, so I can have a good idea for the composition and the color palette, then I will proceed for tweaking.
Stay tuned!

I'm loving this thread, it's definitely inspiring to see all this good work in here.

Jack, I have a question...for drawing silhouettes, what would you say is the most meaningful method for producing them? I've started to draw silhouettes so that my grasp of form, proportion, anatomy, etc. improves, but I'm not sure if I should start them by doing contour, wireframe, or something else.

I started doing some yesterday, about 15-20 min each (trying to speed it up though) and here's a link to the work: http://ptowers.carbonmade.com/projects/2450083#13
