View Full Version : 3ds Max displacement smoothing equivalent in Maya

Hi,
I'm struggling to find the maya equivalent of the mental ray smoothing option for displacement. In Max you can turn it off and this helps to "weld" the edges on a displaced surface with hard face normal, as shown below (from Jeff Patton blog).

Do you know if that option has been implemented in mr for maya and where I can find it?
Thanks.

play around with the displacement approximation settings

actually it appears maya can't do this

3ds mental ray seems to have some kind of special displacement function that displaces the surfaces in the direction of the normal of the vertices. And in max 2010, it seems like it is doing this whether or not you click smooth.

I didn't even know mental ray had such functionality.

I always would just smooth the entire surface thats intended to be displaced, then bevel the edges to keep them sharp. This does produce better results anyways.
