well this has been an ongoing sideline project for me, I tend to tinker with it when i have a moment to spare

i'm modelling it in XSI 3, 99% polys with level 2 subd used to smooth out the surfaces.

it will be part of a bigger environment when it's completed [textured/rigged/anim8ed]

i'd love to hear what you think about the design [by me] the proportions and any ideas you think would improve the model

thanks in advance

jeez tough croud!! :surprised

what do i have to do around here to get some much needed critting?

doesn't anyone want to throw in their moneys worth?

i require a lap dance for feedback...

the design is preety cool i think, has a retro tech feel. i hope the waist isnt done as the mechanics seem a bit to skimpy for such a stressfull part of the machine. im not a fan of the flat top waist thing though, but that's my style, so no worries on that. for a humanoidal robot though i think his proportions are ok, but could be a bit more dynamic, but maybe thats just the pose.

put some arms on him. keep going :)

i quiet engoy the design of the upper body...especialy the head...but you start to loose my intrest with the lower body...

other than that one thing this piece looks to have lots of potential

Daveaustin

haha cheers Stecki
yeh... the whole waist line issue.. you're right i'm not done with that yet, or really the whole design. I'm one of those people who keep adding/changin things until i'm happy with it.
so chances are it'll all change

oh and the arms are coming.. but i'm not sure what they'll look like at the mo

chi..

cheers  the reason why the lower body isn't as 'nice' as the torso, it's because i've only just done them, and the design isn't finished yet.

I tend to design in 3d, so i change things around a lot.

watch out for updates..

damm that felt nice getting some cracking feedback..
Cheers people

arms are still in the making... but one's gonna be a massive claw n the other's gonna hold a spear/lance type thing

anyhoo.. i'd love to hear your crits n thoughts on the modelling so far...

thanks in advance..

hey, I like it. It's got its style, with a bit of old Star Wars' design in the shapes, which is nice :)
keep the updates coming!

Daveaustin
08-07-2003, 10:19 PM
thanks a lot m@, i guess it's a compliment being compared to Star wars.. must be the shoulder pad thing.. but it won't really be like that once i've done with it.. more spikes n armour to come

oh n by the way... awesome LOTR model you got there.. had a look at it..and DANG it's nice!! congrats fella

Hi Dave,

I love your design! It looks really good, I especially like those parts where you break the symmetry. It makes the model a lot more interesting than a completely symmetric model. Continue in this style!

It kind of reminds me of wiroīs bot, although I donīt know why

Your style is excellent, I love it!

Keep going and take some time for the texturing and youīll make it to the front page with it

Daveaustin

Hey thanks Banshee... front page?! you really think it's that good?

i've never had that sort of praise before about any of my work cheers!
yeh i was tryin hard to steer away from a symetrical design, cos nothing bothers me more.. than seeing something that's been done in one half n just flipped without anything else been done to it..

have ya got a piccy of Wiro's bot handy cos i think i know which one you mean, but really wouldn't have put them in the same league/style..

i've been having a well deserved break today, so no updates as yet.. the weather's been too damm fine to sweat over a hot PC!

next update it should have arms... well an arm and a big claw!

Cheers people!

ok here's the next lil update for you all to crit...

not much has changed but added a few things here an there.. including the bakpak and 'working' pistons on his waist..

..this is a real cool bot! And this eye, it makes me quite unsure if he (or she?) is a good or a bad guy.
What i like most is the connection between the hip and the rip cage with this four hydraulic pipes. COOL solution.

What I donīt like are the spikes on itīs shoulder, they doesnīt fit with the rest of the design.

But nevertheless I think Banshee is right, give him cool textures and the right environment and he makes it to the frontpage.

ROCK ON:buttrock:

The shape of the lower leg is really nice, and special. So would like to see the style being repeated on the lower arm and hand too.
Overall nice design!

Thanks every1, so far i'm pretty happy with it. it's come a long way since my initial design.. it was originally planned as a research drone for a laboratory scene i was modelling, but i had a second sight and saw it as something else.

RiotManz: I think i'm aiming for a good guy even though it's gonna be one hard mofo!
The spikes have gone... they looked too "legion of doom"y for me.. so i'm gonna change that detail

Mr Sanders: the concept of the lower leg was something that popped into my head.. no idea where it came from, but seems to work well so far. As for the continuation of design from legs to arms.. i'm definitely planning that, but there are other aspects to take into consideration.. you'll see what i mean later on.

REZI-st: Thanks alot the render is basically HDRI and Final Gathering.. the FG is set at 0.05 and 0.06 if anyone wanted to know that lil bit of info....

check back later for more updates
cheers every1

oh and I'll post a WF next update

Hi Dave,

Donīt get me wrong: I didnīt say youīre imitating Wiro or sth. like that. I just said, your bot reminds me of his stuff.
Maybe just because both models look great

Thatīs his page:

Cheers!

And hey.... please spend at least the same time for texturing as for modelling. This one need GREAT textures! Alright? ;)

I might want a poster though...

:D yeh i know banshee.. but now i can see what you mean... must be the holy armour plating or sommat like that...

as for texturing, it's not my strongest skill.. so i can only hope i can do the model justice

i'm sure a poster could be made up.... you'll have to keep checkin..

ME again ;)

You see, I follow your thread...

I personally got a lot of inspirations for my own work by Dave Wilson, a real mechanical genius. He used to post some of his works here but I havenīt heard or seen anything of him for quite a while now.

You might be interested in his "making-of-series" if you donīt already know them. Iīve printed them out and made sth. like a little booklet out of them, very helpful for any mechanical modeling work :wip:

Hey Banshee thanks for that... yeh i've seen Dave's "Assassin" picture before, i think i saw it in the cgtalk gallery or sommat like that  awesome work..

i'm still battling on with the shape of his upper arm.. can't get it quite right at the mo... but will post an update when it's improved

Cheers

nice design but i am not sold on the arms , i think at least one human type working arm would be great and the other like a bigger arm like a power glove u see on the treminators from warhammer just mabe not as big i hope it helps a bit nice job by the way

DigitalCrystal
08-12-2003, 05:46 AM
Hey man,

Great work. I guess my only thought on the matter is your arms. They do look pretty unique, but I'm thinking that they look out of porportion to the rest of your character. I like the bicepts and tricpets you've got built in and nice work with the 4 hydraulic supports for the hip. I was thinking about a type of belt that would flair at the ends of the hips but then I saw that and thought you did a good job any way.

Keep up the good work.

yeah change the hooks and stick to fat hands :D

Banshee
08-12-2003, 08:12 AM
Yes, I would also remove the hooks (they donīt really make any sense... theyīre too ineffective for sci-fi and for working tools theyīre certainly not suitable) and stick to at least one human-like arm with a proper hand.

The other one could well be soth. like a power glove like someone said above or a multi-functional weapon with morphing guns and launchers.

The hooks make them too long as well...

Daveaustin
08-12-2003, 09:35 AM
WOW :surprised thanks every1 for all that feedback...

so i'm guessing it's a no no for the hooks?! :D to be honest now that i'm lookin at it with fresh eyes it aint really working that well..

I had intended to have at least one arm chunky with FAT hands, but cos i hadn't modelled that, i just mirrored the claw arm.. bit of a mistake huh   gonna get the rest of the arms n hands bashed out today..

Thanks all for your comments.. keep em coming

Rain 2.0

First off...great model. Lots of potential.
I personally would make one arm be a sort of mutifuntion sort of machin gun, slash grenade launcher.etc. And the other hand a multifuntional humaniod hand. With tools such as lock pick in finger sort of ideas.

Good model, Will look foward to finished product.

Daveaustin
08-16-2003, 11:07 AM
Hey Rain 2.0,
nice ideas there.. i like the lock pick thing, reminds me of the fifth element dudes.. at the beginning, when that key comes outa his finger.. I had thought of including a multifunction limb.. but aint decided yet.

i've been doing a lot of sketching, and interview preparing, hence the lack of updates recently.. but i promise i will post some new renders v soon

thanks for all the feedback so far

Real nice work i must say =) I don't like the hook arms either but they do not look bad :)

I was just woundering, the 5 (or 1) shell(s) that he has on (over) his head, can he move them? =)

(maybe not a question your were waiting for =P)

Facial Deluxe
08-16-2003, 01:36 PM
I like the head a lot :)
The arms makes me think that it could be some sadic war machine.
I would change the hook (although I like them) for some rough 2/3 fingers hand (grabber), so that he could grab some human ennemy by their head and shot them at point blank range, their head stiked on the muzzle of the gun canon and vaporized away :D
Love that potential brutality :)

Daveaustin
08-16-2003, 02:49 PM
Hey Benderman, Facial Deluxe thanks...

I gotta let you all know.. the hooks have gone.. I just haven't had chance to post an updated render.. i realised that the hooks didn't fit with the rest of the image.

the new forearms are three fingered power glove style hands.. all the better for popping heads...

benderman : the 'shells' that are on top of his head.. they rotate round, primarily to cover the input socket on the back of his head.. but i might modify them to create some sort of facial visor ala Stargate stylee.. I dunno yet

i'm doing some massive renders for print at the moment, so my pc is crippled at the mo..

hope you all follow this thread.. Cheers
