View Full Version : toon shader...HELP!
Hi, I remember doing some minor toon shades some years ago,but recently I tried max's 'ink n paint' materials.I loaded a max file with some lizard toon and the system hanged.I check the tutorials but I think it nothin but crap.So I tried stuff myself but things just dont seem to look very cartoony. The tut only showd some stick man or somethin, but I'm trying to make a toon character human being thing. It seems that the lines arent too good.
Any help, links, tutorials, websites, images would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mora,
Ink&Paint is actually not too bad... it can be a bit slow (especially with high AA), but overall i find the look it offers to be rather nice.
In the image you posted, I'm guessing it's the lips that are giving you the most problems... you might want to spend a bit of time experimenting with the overlap and underlap controls. They are a bit twitchy to use until you get a handle on how it really work, so I'd suggest if that's the case then set aside a few hours to learn that particular part of the shader.
If that doesn't quite help, fire back a reply :)

I notice that the ink n paint shader looks much better in a perspective or camera veiw. If it's used in a veiw without a pov there may be parts of the render that are completly black.
Also I always turn underlap off, just a personal preference.

Actually, if you don't use one of those views you might get some horrible artifacts.
In addition - mora, if you want to post the scenefile of the toon image you rendered, i'll be happy to see if i can improve on the settings and send it back to you... at least you might get a better starting point.

I appreciate your input:)
just took a bite of Arnot's cookie and made this:applause: nothing special, but imo,I think it's better then the first render:)
