Can anyone help me find or point me in the right direction inorder to find a shading plug-in or network that helps me apply normal maps. Preferably free. I was under the impression that you applied normal maps to the bump map slot, but i was informed that you needed a software that applies it for you. Thanks in advance for the help.

check maxplugins.de for the free gnormal plugin by ben lipman. add this to your bump slot and apply your normalmap there.

this only works unter R5 at the moment.

any ETA on gnormal for R6? also is there a free .nmf exporter available for R6? the free ATI normal mapper only holds R5 .nmf exporter.

no kaldera is not an option at the moment

well, i have no idea if gnormal is being developed further at all.
honestly the results aren't that great either. not really comparable to kaldera's normal bump map type.

seems you are stuck with this in max (like me). since discreet doesn't try to adress this problem, users could either bug them or mankua for releasing a freebie standalone map plugin. or write your own, of course :/

yes, that sucks but the number of requests for being able to render normal maps seem to be rather low among the userbase. probably because this is still pretty much uncharted territory and many seem to believe that it's a 3d game only thing.

i find it essential to any kind of animation and even a big help in stills. Lets see what zbrush to have under the hood in regards of creating and exporting normal maps. it looks promising tho. hopefully it will create such a demand that highend apps will implement displacement mapping in core apps, or official plugins at first of course.

i guess its the waiting game until then...

In case you missed it...
Normal Mapping in 3ds max (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=833112)

It should be said that displacement mapping is very different from normal mapping. The former creates silhouette detail and true parallax, while the latter is merely a surface trick with no silhouette.

About NMF support, you might take a look at Mike Bunnell's ATI-tool mod... he supports OBJ, among other things.
