scrog 08-31-2009, 02:08 AM How do I paint with a photo texture?
Will I need to create a brush from the photo?

You cannot create a brush from a color photo. A Photoshop brush is always a grayscale image. If you have a grayscale photo, I suppose you could create a brush from it, but it may not behave the way you want it to.
There are a few approaches you could use to paint a texture. I prefer to place my texture above the object I want to paint it onto, turn its opacity down, then give it a layer mask filled completely with black. Grab a brush with a medium-hard edge and paint white on to the mask where I want the texture to show. Obviously, this requires a photo texture of sufficient resolution to cover the object to be textured.
Once the texture is painted in, I raise the opacity back to 100% and experiment with blend modes and opacity until the texture appears to integrate well with the object. An additional layer above the texture filled with 50% gray and set to Overlay can be useful to dodge and burn additional shading onto the texture, just in case you need to enhance or alter the lighting.
There's an excellent explanation of how the blend modes work at cgtextures.com: http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=tutorial&name=blendmodes

or you can select the area of texture you want and go to Edit/Define Pattern. select your prefer brush and in the brush settings under Texture, select your defined pattern with the blending options you want.
or you can use the pattern clone tool and select your defined patterned from there.

I did a test as follows:
Create new image.
Open the photo image. Select clone stamp. Alt-click a clone source in photo.
Switch to new image. Paint.
Play with the "aligned" checkbox.
