View Full Version : "Stretchy wall" effect - how to achive it?
Defonten 08-30-2009, 05:14 PM Hi,
here's the fragment of poor MJ's "Who is it" music video. This is the effect which I'm after - to make a wall deform in a stretchy way as if someone from behind pushing it.
Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!

Hey,u can do this using wrap tool or depth map.

Oh.. depth map?? Didn't think of it, sounds interesting.. hmm ..do you mean render TGAs and then assign the sequence as a displacement map?
Concerning Wrap tool. As long as I know, wrap tool won't let me say rotate a "face" behind the wall cos' the "face" geometry will pull corresponding points of wall geometry with it. But I only want points of the wall to be temporarily influenced by geometry and after the face is taken away - I want the wall geomtry to return to its initial shape. Is this possible with the Wrap tool?

i didnt look at the clip, but sounds like something you could do easily with nCloth

Hey,This is my step
1.Make Ncloth Plane with Hirez
2.Make passive to influnce obj
3.& transform constrain to boundary of plane.
But Not Good shape is coming in output,So how can i Push internal depth i mean inside jaw

Make the cloth plane very high resolution and turn off self collision. To push the cloth in lower the stretch/compression resistance and make the pressure attribute negative(which pushes inward along the cloth normal). If collisions fail or twitch increase substeps. You could also use damping if you don't want it too bouncy. Another thing that might be useful is setting the wind to blow inward towards the face. Or you could create a field that sucks the cloth towards the center of the head( although the negative pressure is probably all you need ).
If you really want it to conform super tightly to the head, then on the nRigid for the head set the ForceField to double sided and make the field magnitude negative. (you may wish to animate it to make the effect gradually increasing)

@ substep 10 & 40x40 rez ,scene start to crash .

Perhaps lower stretch resistance and increase damp. You may also need higher substeps.

Make the stretch/compression resistance lower. Do not use any inputAttract and make sure the vertices in your plane are only constrained at the boundary. If need be increase the substeps further, although the amount of substeps require will be in proportion to the stretch resistance and pressure. Pushout on the face nRigid could help, but it shouldn't be needed.
I've attached a simple scene. All I did was lower stretch/compression/bend resistance, turn off self collide, toggle on ignore gravity and transform constrained the boundaries. The mesh should be quite high resolution if you want to capture a lot of detail.
I also set forceField = doubleSided and fieldMagnitude to -0.1 on the colliding nRigid to make the cloth cling more. One can instead use pressure but that works best with a closed nCloth object with volume conservation and a negative pump rate( like vacuum packing).
One might also wish to add some damp, depending on the desired look.
