View Full Version : Maya 2010 & production.mi shaders...!?
withego 08-30-2009, 10:18 AM Does anybody find the same problem with Maya 2010 using the hidden by default "production.mi shaders" like mip_matteshadow & mip_binaryproxy?
Just installed a fresh copy of Maya 2010 and everytime I try to use one of this production.mi shaders, Mental Ray keep crashing with this messages appearing in the output window:
PAR 0.4 error 021310: no connection to 39
PAR 0.4 error 021017: msg send to host 39 failedJOB 0.4 fatal 231003: executing unknown job tag 0x4f4c5f41
DB 0.4 warn 042004: can't send pin of tag 0x4f4c5f41
JOB 0.4 fatal 231003: executing unknown job tag 0x4f4c5f41

No I can use these shaders are fine for me.
What I found was that using a Maya 2009 scene in 2010 majorly screwed up! It has something to do with corruption of the mia_material shaders. Is this an older scene you are using? If not then I have not seen this problem before, sorry!
I just tried a simple mip_matteshadow setup and it did crash, but I saw no error message, and when I tried a 2nd time it worked correctly. I've now tried a few different setups and they all work as expected. (So I guess that first crash remains a mystery)
So far no problems with older scenes either (only tested a couple though). Hamburger, did you figure out what part of the mia's caused the problem?

Interesting, those production shaders been very stable for me, never had a problem with matteshadow, card, or binaryproxy (now 2010 is fixed a lot of mr bugs I almost exclusively use BSP2 now, don't know if this would make much of a difference).
"no connection to 39"
"msg send to host 39 failed"
Try asking on mental images forums. these sound like the key.
(To answer your question djx, it only happened to certain shaders in the scene and they'd act really odd. Not as in straight out crashing Maya but they'd have really odd artifacting and bright white spots everywhere and default light linking would not work and they wouldn't render properly in the hypershade. It was just a matter of deleting the shaders and rebuilding them though.)
But it is never a good idea to use a new Maya with old scene.

Dear Hamburger,
First, I used a 2009 sp1a scene and MR on Maya 2010 crashes.
Then I just tried with a new fresh Maya 2010 scene and with the production.mi shaders, MR still keep crashing with the output messages, mentioned above.
So I deleted the mip_matteshadow & mip_binaryproxy, optimized the scene and rebuild them from scratch and everything works as expected, no more crashes...???
The same first mistery crash, experienced by djx....!
Now I'm testing my extremely heavy 2009 sp1a exterior, and let's see if and which Production.mi & Mia X will give me troubles, stay tuned....!
Ciao....!

I confirm that importing a 2009sp1a scene in maya 2010, some of the Mia material X, which was working just fine in maya 2009sp1a, start to freak out completely in Maya 2010.
Mia material X Glass and metal shaders in particular..!
Also the Bump Combiner, which works fine in previous releases, just behaves oddly in Maya 2010...!
I agree with Hamburger that to delete and rebuild Mia X shaders in simple test scenes with a few polys and materials could be accetable, but on huge files with hundreds of very elaborate shaders is just impossible...!
Now I will check if at least assemblies with Bsp2 works, and the photon and built in Ao Bug, with the Mia X passes spotted by Hamburger are being solved, if not I will just uninstall 2010 and back to 2009 sp1a...!

Alex Sandri

Interesting, thats good to know I guess it's not just me stuffing something up! For me in Maya 2010 if I have a mia_material_x with a bump plugged into bump standard it will work. However if you delete the bump map the mia_material_x shader breaks and it seems like light linking is busted. Something weird is going on in Maya 2010!
Its not mental ray related but I noticed when rebuilding shaders that the Copy Tab feautre off Attribute Editor does not work anymore. :(
