I'm trying to create the kind or outdoor camera movement where you see things up close to the camera whiz past really quickly, then things a little further back move past more slowly, then the large things like buildings or mountains that are way in the distance, move past very slowly. You see this a lot in race type games, I hope I'm describing this accurately. There's probably a name for it. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of some particular technique or tricks for doing this. Is it all done in one scene, just putting some elements really far away from the camera? Does the camera need some special setting? Is there a way of putting different elements on different planes and then shifting them as the camera moves to exaggerate the effect? Is some of it done in post, like maybe the very back most elements could be rendered out separately and then made to crawl past very slowly in a separate layer? If anyone has any experience doing this type of thing and could give me some pointers, that would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Maya 2009. Thanks!

It's called parallax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax). You could opt to create everything in your scene but it might be somewhat unwieldy and cumbersome for lighting, or I prefer to try and render seperate 'distance' layers for compositing.
