artraider 08-28-2009, 05:27 PM Hello, I have been working lately on this fountain and at my wits end im working alone and moved to ca and have not been able to make any contacts but with this fountain I was told it was low rez ect.. I need some crits with this so I can figure really what I am missing lately,I can tell it needs more grit/wear to it but I tried to give it a nice large texture and put time into it but I guess not good enough. I don't want to give up but can not seam to win with art lately.

Could we see some wireframes of the mesh? What I noticed right away is that the center of the fountain seems too bland. I almost thought it was a default gray material there for a second. Did you hand paint your textures? I'm seeing some image artifacts in there though that may be from the compressed render image itself. If you didn't I would highly suggest that you do. Think about what the wear and tear on a stone fountain would look like. Maybe add some green streaks of algae along the bottom just to give it a little color and variety.

The texture is far from done, I was thinking of trying to age the texture more.. I just thought I had a good start going.http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c72/artraider/full.jpg This is the refrance I had originally gone from and tried to alter from a little bit.http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c72/artraider/wire-5.jpg This is a wire of the model.

Is props like this fountain and couch I posted before what I need to to do to try to get into the industry or have a good portfolio? I know there is a recent post of asking about breaking into the industry and I have been still going at it after graduating from college in 2005.For my own work I have been trying to catch up with artists and get better in general but feel I am in this all alone and moving to ca/huntington I hope to make contacts but somehow even that feels bleak.Do I just keep going at the small props and hope something turns out? as said I feel at wits end and keep trying till something sticks and I land another art test like I have in the past.

Well, to be honest, with those two props you're not going to get anything. There's really not enough detail in there, and the textures are very bland right now. You should check out this for some inspiration: http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=62114 Notice how there's lots of small repeating details, which both improve the visual look, and help give a sense of scale. When you're texturing, try to separate certain parts with different values/hue to help it pop more. Put some wear on the edges, some gradients, etc. so that it's not just a solid colour overall.
Something that might help you get a job better would be to make a small scene. Have a couple different props fitting into the same environment, showing that you can keep a consistent style. You don't need to go overboard, one room would suffice. Also, I don't think moving is really the best way to make contacts. Everything is online now, so get active in forums, join a mod, just do something to meet more people and improve your skills at the same time.
