I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me how I can go about making a round mop in maya. I'm pretty new to maya, and i've been playing around with hair effects, but I can't seem to get something that looks and animates like a mop. I have looked at the ncloth options, but is it possible to add the ncloth feature to a polygon cyclinder, or are you just restricted to polygon planes.

You can add nCloth to any polygon object.

You could just create fur on the polyShape, set it up with the desired look and then attach a hair system to the fur, that way you will get dynamics on you fur and somewhat accurate behaviour.

EDIT: Here i got you a shot of a quick setup i've done, would need some tweaking,etc, but so you get the basic idea:
