looks good but the dof isn't working for me.
You could get alot more in focus on a bright day like that, especially that bench.

dof doesn't quite do it for me either though I claim that it is the background that isn't sharp enough. The amount of dof is relative to the distance. If you focus in 100m 200m will look almost as clear. if you focus in 1m 2m will look blurry (4m will look quite as blurry as 2m)
So the close foreground would blur more than the background.
But yeah I would turn it generally down a bit (less render time too)

Nice work my friend .
I would personaly make the city on the background a bit
more foggy/blury but it's really c00l this way too
well done!

Can I ask how you built up that city?
Because your city looks great, and I've been trying for a while to make a good cityscape.
Also, what's that glass thing in the top left? Some kind of incense / oil lamp?

I would personaly make the city on the background a bit more foggy/blurry
so...I'm in the Dark here...to raise the blur effect of DOF or to lower it?
Also, what's that glass thing in the top left? Some kind of incense / oil lamp?
It's some sort of glass with three sticks in it :p
Lucidium, the city is modeled with greeble tool then turned into poly and textured piece by piece (the use ctrl+D if you're laisy or something  )
Btw, nobody asked me about that statue...what do u mean what statue? that statue on the lower right...oh, u can't see it?Can't see the cars also? Well...I tell u: there are cars and a statue in the city...

dof isn't generally a good idea for architecture, makes the models look like a physical desk top model. try it without dof, or if using dof just use a touch of near dof.

DOF is too much. As said above on a bright day like this there would hardly be any DOF on this photo at all.
I agree with Kerosene

I may be in the dark, but what the heck is a greeble tool in Max? I've searched through the help, and is this just a slang term for some other tool...please elaborate...

Hi guys,
nice greeble City.
Johannes Schlörb also wrote a tutorial about this plugin

It's not that hard, like lot people might think  :)

hey man, great grats!
The foreground is beautiful!
Altough the background is a mess (I mean the DOF -why? and textures - repeated textures are really annoying - and this sky....), I think you have something in your head that I envy.

Great cityscape render. I love V-ray renders. Your render time was pretty good. Did you use photons for the GI or just a skylight setup? I try to avoid using photon GI lighting when I use a raytracing GI path. Skylight GI setups cut the render time and still look fairly good. Can't get enough of the GI good stuff.
Yeah the render with lower blurr looks better.

The DOF is much, much better in the last picture, but still not perfect. But i think the problem lies elsewhere, namely the composition. Although you put the ball and such in there as an eye catcher, it does not do the job very well, the city is just too overhelming. You maybe look at it for a split of a second, but then, your eyes will focus on the cityscape in the background, which now seems to be the central point of the picture (at least, this is the case for me). Because of its blurriness, an observer may say it does not fit.
My suggestion is, to alter the displayed frame in a way that you have, for example, the ball as the central point of the picture, or inverse the blur (if the blur has to stay in). Means, ball, flowers and railing blurred, city sharp.
Otherwise, the picture is

Altough the background is a mess
The background was suposed to be a mess...it's a view from Bucharest,Romania. Here are some photos that inspired me.
the textures are repeating because that's the way bucharest is built. By repeating the same patterns over and over again with small variations.
Did you use photons for the GI or just a skylight setup?
Just a skylight setup with HDRI.
@bentarr: true man...but it's got to be some blur on the city (the fog and so on).About the eye focusing on the city...well I started this image for a contest "build a city" so...

I really think you could use some sort of plugin like tint or some other sort of post-production to alter the way the city backdrop fades into blue. Other then that, great photo-realism boy...... top-notch:applause:

I think you should see a horizon from this angle. Like in Max4ever's little pic in the middle. It looks like the city is on the edge of a cliff.

I'm glad you like it GreenIce
JDaniel , I must agree, the horizon is not visible enough...:(
