I dont think you can hide an individual face, unless you write a script that pertains to a particular face. What you can do is assign a texture to a face, and make it invisible... :shrug:

ya i can see that but that will leave the edge were it was and that the main thing i would like to hide.

Using Isolate select you can hide faces,
From your viewport select all the faces you want visable then go to Show>>Isolate select>>View Selected Now it will only display what you had selected.
Then to hide other faces, select them, then go to Show>>Isolate Select>>Remove Selected Objects and they will be hidden.
There is also a hide faces script with the Bonus Game tools package so you might want to check that out.
