View Full Version : spec vs. gloss?
moiremusic 08-25-2009, 10:06 PM I've never used a gloss map before, and I'm wondering what the difference is between specularity and glossiness. I thought I'd be able to find a comparison on the internet somewhere, but surprisingly was not.
Specularity and Reflection seemed to always do the trick for me.

I can only say how it is in Max, but I don't think it is much different in other application:
Specular determines how strong the highlight is and Glossines how sharp the highlight is.

Yup, the name changes a bit in different applications, but usually they all have some sort of control for the strength, and a different control for the blurriness of the highlight. And then some have separate controls for the reflection. Or some have only 2 controls that affect both the highlight and reflection.

The specularity of an object determines how shiny it is and how light is broken up by it's surface
Glossiness is the property that determines how widely light is spread out on an objects surface
